"Hello," Lana said, approaching Mitts again. "That must have been a terrible fall you had," she continued, shaking her head sorrowfully. "And--my goodness, you've only three legs! The fourth one is a replacement. Wherever did you get that out in the wild? Oh, of course, you cannot speak."

Mitts nodded. She tried to explain that she had an owner back in the woods that she had no intention of going back to, but she couldn’t talk. Mitts started crying. She couldn’t communicate to anyone. She felt so alone and scared.

"Oh dear," Lana whispered, her voice full of pity. She lay her head gently on Mitts' shoulders, trying to comfort her without causing her any more pain. She could not imagine what it would be like to be able to listen, but not speak. But what could be done about it? Could the keepers help Mitts, or would they be too upset that foreign wolves had entered the exhibit?

Swift walked over to her. She had been ...hiding?..in a strange den while the whole drama played out. She put one of her paws on Mitts’s. “Can you make any sound?”
Swift also felt terrible. She had no idea what was happening. The Alphas seemed evil, and she didn’t want to meet them. Her friends were hurt. She was scared.

Mitts tried to make any sound, but nothing came out. She tried barking, howling, whimpering, any noise she could think of. Nothing was coming out. She felt like a failure. She had come to try and rescue her friend, but she was too weak to do anything. She just caused more problems.
