Gluten Free Chickens

I am not familiar with ANY food allergies.
I read this once and don't know much about it but want to share it:

I know of this feed that is wheat free, I will have to look at my sheet to see if I can find more.

Just to clear things up a bit, the only grains that contain gluten are wheat, barley, and rye. Also I am gluten intolerant and have not noticed any issues with gluten in my chickens eggs. And my chickens eat wheat as part of their diet.

When the OP switched to a gluten free diet they ate a great many eggs with no issues for awhile. However if you eat a great many of one food item for a long time you run the risk of developing a sensitivity to, no matter what it is.

I would just take a break from eggs for a bit and focus on eating as much of a varied diet as you can. You should be able to reintegrate eggs soon. Also something I did was too try various types of eggs. Duck eggs were easiest to find, followed by quail and goose eggs supplied by friends / family as I don’t raise those.

Metzer Farms sell flats of duck eggs (for eating, not hatching) which you can mail order if needed. Also Kansas City Quail farms will ship eating eggs as well.

As someone who has been down this road already I really hope this helps you out.
 
Did you find a good feed? I’m currently in the same boat.

I wish, but we now have enough chickens the organic feed was so expensive that we either mix affordable feed and the organic or just the normal crumbles. If your willing to pay the price, the New Country Organic food was really good and I think wheat was lower down on ingrediants.
 
Seems to me that the chicken would digest the gluten in anything they eat and, therefore, the gluten would not pass through to the meat or eggs. It was my understanding that most grains contain gluten, most plant eating animals eat grain, and that meat, eggs and milk does not contain gluten. Am I wrong here?

True on the meat, almost true on eggs(and usually good enough for most celiac people) , not true on milk.

I was diagnosed as intolerant to 27 different foods. Wheat and eggs were 2. They said cut all those out for months and try adding back one food at a time a couple days a week, and then try a different one the next week... when it came to eggs I got some local who fed organic feed. I was fine for months eating 2 eggs 4x a week. All of a sudden my joints hurt again. No new foods had been added... I was reading ingredients on everything I had and nothing had changed. I asked her if she was feeding the same feed, no she had switched and when we compared bags the old feed didn't have wheat and the new feed did
I live alone so any cross contamination would have to be on the eggs before I bought them.. so I tried washing them and eating them after a week... woke up in the middle of the night with joints hurting.
... and that is why I have chickens again.

Good to hear about your experience. (Well, not good for you, sure makes things harder for you, but good to hear that some people can be that sensitive to the gluten).

Out of curiosity, was the gluten feed that caused problems high in wheat or whatever gluten full stuff?

I wonder, the feed I use doesn't have much gluten full ingredients.... I need to read the label again... but the scratch we use for treats is just barley so gluten.

Sorry, just thinking outloud... wondering if there is a "tipping point", as in a bit of gluten fed to the hens is fine, but a diet of 60% wheat is bad...

Guess it doesn't matter.... :confused:

I think you are right .
It was high in wheat, 2nd ingredient.
I think it might have had another gluten grain too

For you folks with specific grain allergies and chickens at home; is it eating the eggs, or being out there with the offending feed, and the dust, in their environment that's actually an issue? There shouldn't be much, if any, gluten in the eggs, but there would be a fair amount in the coop, on the birds, and as dust in the environment.

the store eggs, even organic, bothered me... I got some organic farmer market eggs and they didn't bother me.... one reason I got chickens.. tired of paying $8 a dz.... although there was an article that it's really the roundup that some people are intolerant of.
