GMO's and Factory Farming...

x2 GMO's are needed to help feed the worlds growing population

Agreed. GMO's are not the terrible things people make them out to be. Blindness is very prominent in many parts of Africa due to lack of beta-carotene in their diets, which is found in veggies such as carrots. Rice can be grown very well in Africa, but as us gardeners know, carrots probably do not! Scientists have been able to create a variety of rice, a GMO, that grows well in Africa and is packed full of beta-carotene. This will hopefully help prevent blindness in not only Africans, but people around the world.

The news media will shine a light on the bad stuff because it gets the most attention. Please dont believe one side without seeing the other.

Factory farms cram birds into cages to small, give turkeys steroids to make them fat, all sorts of things to pigs... I won't go into detail.

Although the first part of your sentence may be believed by some people here, the 2nd part shows a bit of ignorance. All of the BYCers here that raise their own turkeys for meat know that a broad-breasted turkey is going to get fat, no matter what you feed them. They are bred specifically to grow quickly be economical for the farmer. As for the pig thing, I am not as knowledgeable about swine as I am poultry, so I will leave that part alone.

I'm not saying I have a problem with trying to increase the yield on a standard 150 acre field. However, the government should have done EXTENSIVE testing, due to the fact these are completely new 'creations.' They didn't though because they were paid off by one of the largest and most powerful corporations in the U.S. Now we, as the consumer have to reek the consequences of this upon ourselves. They are trying to stop the labeling of GMO in foods. I as a consumer should be able to know what is in my food I am purchasing. Whether I use that information or not is pointless. The solution would have been simple in the beginning, but now that it is here to stay we can only do what we can. These corporations are completely money based, raiding a family farm and demanding anywhere from $30,000 to millions of dollars isn't exactly neighborly. Or the 'terminator gene' these are things that we CAN do something about. But the people we put our money and faith into protect us fail for their own financial gain.

Check out BYC's sister site: http://www.TheEasyGarden.com this comes up over there a LOT. Most of the users over there are already from BYC.

You'll find this topic to have several points of view. I still go with government conspiracy... its more fun.

Thank you. I have an Uncle that has one of the largest farms in MI. I know that we must feed the current population as it is and farming - enhanced, or not is the only way to do so.

farmers are committing suicide because of gm crops. They are not allowed to save the seeds, the seeds where 1000% more expensive they where not told they needed to irrigate the seeds it was in an area that was rain set. It did say on the bag that they had to be irrigated but that information is only good if a you can read and b if you can read in english they couldn't and after getting into huge debts they killed themselves by drinking poison. Also seed saving was not allowed. Seed saving is done so at the worst case you can at least eat next year. With gm crops you have to buy each year, so if you have a bad crop one year you starve next year.

100,000 farmers have committed suicide because of this how is this saving life? You are talking about people who are so poor they have no money and have to barter what usually happens is they brought seeds spread them through the group and next year used saved seeds they grow the next years crops. After a few years you get crops that are adapted to the area they are grown in. Monsanto doesn't allow seed saving you have to buy each year so if you can't afford it one year then its game over.
