Goat breed that doesn't make much noise (:

There is no goat breed that you can bank your dollar on that will be quiet. Every goat has their own personality in each breed. I have some Nubians that never hardly make a sound and I have some that hwen they see you they cry like the long lost baby. I also have some Alpines that are very quiet and some that are loud. Each goat has their own personality.

I had six Boer goats, three Nubian and an Egyptian pygmy goat, and some Dutch Landrace, I certainly would say that the Boer goats were noticeably calmer and better tempered, although I agree with the general consensus that all goats have different personalities I have to recommend Boer goats, they really are a sturdy, level headed breed. Goats really aren't that loud if they have their needs met, but make sure you handle them well and get them young so you can temper their personalities a little. Boers are not good milking goats. They are a breed bred for meat. They are not bred to have long lactactions, large milkable teats, and produce large amounts of milk. In fact, many boers have teat deformities, such as double teats. It is very bad for a milking animal, and does not make it easier to milk. Their breed standard allows such teat deformities because they are meat goats, not milk goats.

Some folks cross boers and Nubians (loud breed) to make a bulky cross with better milk production.

Alpines, Oberhaslis, Saanens, Nigerian Dwarves, Toggenburgs, and LaManchas are a few dairy breeds of goat. Nubians too, but they are, as a whole, very noisy. Kind of like most Siamese cats are talkers, most Nubians are too.

I would not recommend boar goats as a milk goat. They were originally raised for meat; therefore they have better quality meat, but their milking ability isn't the best. (Plus they often have terrible udders; milking a goat with three or four teats is not fun.) Personally, I like the taste of traditional dairy goat's milk. Some traditional dairy breeds include Toggenburg, Alpine, Lamancha, Nubian, Saanen, Sable, Oberhasli and Nigerian Dwarf. Out of these breeds, I recommend Nigerian Dwarves. They require less space, less food, etc., but produce a surprising amount of milk for their small size! And, their milk, on average, has the highest buttermilk content out of all the other dairy goat breeds. My friend's Nigerian gives almost a gallon a day, and it tastes amazing! Like melted ice cream.

All great information. I would not recommend the boar goat either if you are looking for milk. You can research goats at the following site: ADGA.ORG, there are 6 different breeds of the Dairy Goat.The Nigerian is well liked by the reasons stated above. There are a few things to consider when choosing any breed. Are there others in your area that have stud services or herds for replacement bucks of the breed of choice? If you do not have people in your area that have Nigerians or any other breed you choose, then getting a buck if you do not know how to AI is a must. One thing to remember when choosing Nigerians is their small size and I would not recommend hand milking with this breed I would recommend a milking machine.

One breed that is also very popular is the Nubian Diary goat for its hardiness. The other breed that is extremely popular is the Alpine Diary Goat. I have both the Alpine and the Nubian.

You can check the ADGA Dairy Goat Directory for herds in your area for the breed of choice. I would recommend choosing a breed that is of the same as herds in your area. This way a replacement buck down the road is much easier unless you want to pay those air flight charges. Depending on where you live you may find that there are herds of every breed in your area making choosing that much more fun!

Note: Whoever you purchase from be sure it is from a tested herd. Request to see the testing results. CAE is a big one. Be sure to purchase from a CAE Neg herd.

So, I guess Boers are out unless I want meat goats, which I will probably get in the future.. but is there a goat breed out there that does not make a lot of noise, like Nubians, and has good milk? A quieter milk goat is what I really want.

I think you would be happy with a Saanen/Sable or LaMancha.
