Goat housing

I am jealous... I would love free rentals....

I thought you might need the fan more so than heat...I saw raleigh was 100 the other day. Not sure how far away that is form you...

I'm about 30 minutes from Raleigh. We got up to about 106 one day this past week. Duh, I wasn't even thinking about the heat. But then again heat doesn't bother me...cold does.

But anyway, will they have access to an outside pen as well ? They won't be cooped up in a shed 24/7 will they ?

Oh lord no. I wouldn't get goats if I didn't room for them. The house is going in a fenced in (2"x4" horse wire fence) area that is odd shaped but is probably 1000 sq ft. Then I have 2 acres of woods they'll be able to browse in.

For windows I'm going to just leave it open space with shutters for when it's cold.

Just in case y'all haven't seen my babies yet here's a link. They're the last 2 girls on the bottom of the page, last 2 on the right.

Have you ever had goats before ? I assume you know you have to trim their hooves, and what their general care is ?
If not ... just ask

Have not had goats before. I have been researching for about 8 months now though. Newbies always need a helping hand so thank you for offering to help me out. I just might take you up on it.

Let me know how that horse fence works out for you ... I know my goats go through my horse fence before you can say "DARN GOATS!" ... hahaha !

Oh and the wooded area ... make sure you don't have poisenous plants for them to get into. Cherry trees are poisenous, shiney leaf plants (azaleas, rhodedendrin, mt.laurel, etc.) are poisenous. Also Milk Weed.
For a list of poisenous plants, got to my goat site http://lilpygmygoats.tripod.com and go to the care and management page. You can read through that, then there's a link for poisenous plants - you can click on that and see what plants you might have that are potentally harmful to your animals/goats.

At one time I had my goats free range during the day - but then when I learned that we are polutted with cherry trees - that put an end to the free range goats. Now they must stay in their pens ... for my ease of mind.

Good to know you've been doing your research !!! I did the same thing when I first got into goats .. I'm a research NUT !! There's a few good goat forums out there ... if ya wanna check them out. www.goattalk.freeforums.org
www.thegoatspot.net are a couple of the best !

The Goat Spot is more active. Goat Talk is my forum ... and is active, but not quite as active as The Goat Spot. But make sure if you join any of them ... ya gotta join mine to (wink wink) hahaha !

Oh and I mean what I said ... if you want a mentor - I'm here. Just email me or yahoo messenger.
I had a mentor when I started, and it's the BEST THING I can advice to do ! I learned so much from her ! And we became good friends and she even came to my home (I live in South West PA and she lives in NJ). She still gives me advice when I need it. So I highly HIGHLY recommend a goat mentor ! I would've been so lost without mine - even with all the research I did ... there's nothing like a good mentor who's always there for you.
Anyway, the offer stands

Not to highjack the thread..but....

Julie, you said goats will go through a horse fence.... I recently acquired two pygmy's. (1 week ago) Right now they are fenced with welded wire 36"(I believe) fence. Not real heavy duty. Are you telling me this will not hold them? Mine are only 2 months and 3 months old.

What kind of fence is best.

That's not highjacking...that goes along with the original topic. I can't wait to hear the answer.

Here's my fencing:

And a video:

The first picture and second picture... that is the type I am currently using.(not the chain link)....

(note being extra cautious today after kingdean and I got into it yesterday and was escalated to Nifty-Chicken)

The problem with that welded wire fencing is they will push underneath of it. Even if you think you stretched it tight enough, after they rub (and rub...and rub....) on it it will loosen and they'll slip right under. I put the same fencing on the inside of our 3-board fence, and then I had to run another board underneath the bottom one (almost on the ground; just a couple of inches between the board and the ground/board above it). That works wonderfully. You could also run a strand or two of electric down low to keep them off of the fence.

DH was thinking about tent spikes to hold the bottom tight. Would that work?

I think there's a full moon over BYC this week. Everyone's getting into it.

Not sure on the tent spikes--you could give it a try. How long are they? Will they stand 70 lbs pushing on them without popping out of the ground?

I don't know what it is around here lately, maybe you're right Trisha, maybe it's a full moon!!

I posted a political response to some thread the other day...very not like me! Well, the political response is like me, but I usually avoid that kind of thing here.
