Goat People...

Hey

Just thought of another idea...If you can get them when they are 1 day old...or close to that.....they become very close to you and will follow you everywhere. They will need to be bottle feed for a while but that is also a fun experience. The two we have actually spent the weekend with me when they were days old. They had diapers on and we fed them with bottles about every 4 hours. I wish I had pictures......

i agree with the part about leaning on the fence. that is how they broke down one of my sturdy fences was not trying to escape but by continuously scratching their backs against it. eventaully, the fence flopped over.

How bout I give them something to rub on? Like large logs or something? They'll also be against the chicken's chain link fence, hopefully they'll rub on that since it's so mcuh stronger.

i've been working on something similar. it cant' hurt, that's for sure.

i would just watch and if you see them starting doing it let them no right away NO. i didn't realize at the start what it would cumulatively do.

The main breed I hear of here for milk are Nubians. What breeds are you looking into? We had 2 goats before Hurricane Rita - a Barbado Ram and a nubian/boar girl. The Ram who was about 10yrs old died of heat stroke a week before the hurricane & the girl lived through it & then ended up drowning a few weeks later.
Anyhow, she was just like another dog. Her name was Belle and anytime I can home she would 'help' me bring in groceries and even follow me in the house. I even freaked out b/c one time I left the door open & found her inside on the BED with my new born baby! She was the best. Once we get settled in our new home we will definately have goats again for sure.

Btw, I have read there are 2 types of nubian and one is more of a milk producer than the other but has to be milked daily, kind of like a cow.

Hi Southern, One of my friends is going to sell his goats. I'll probably buy most of his goats but I think he'll have a buck left. I'm pretty sure they're nigerian.

Nigerians are super fun!! You will love them. It is nice to get bottle rasied babies or bottle raise yourself...kids are the cutest things ever, and the bottle raised ones end up being like lap dogs (which can be both good and bad!

) They will push underneath of that fence that you have there as soon as they get bored--which could take months or minutes! You could try running a strand or two of electric fencing inside of your woven wire fence at goat height. It's cheap, and if it's well ground and installed properly (if you've got it "lit" really well) they'll only test it once!

Here are some links that should have breeders listings; there's got to be some in NC:

If you want, I know of some reputable Nigerian breeders in the VA area (maybe not too far from you?) and I can PM you some info. Just let me know.

Oooohhh, goats are so cool. Have fun!! I have 3 does that I'm planning to breed very soon, so hopefully I'll have some early summer babies--I can't wait!

Here's my Nigerian, Mary, in all her fuzzy winter coat glory.

We got her and her brother at 5 weeks old and bottle fed them until they were 8 weeks. She is really friendly and will follow anyone anywhere.
