Goat People...

Southern I was going to get goats this spring but with another baby oon the way I thought I'd better wait. Here are a few sights I learned a lot fron www.fiascofarm.com and
www.cornerstorefarm.net also I ordered a lot of goat suppliers catalogs. They usually put pretty useful info. in with the products they sell. Have fun with your goats

I'm planning on putting the goat pen next to the chicken yard, the chicken yard is chain link fencing. The fence I'm going to put up for the goats is 5' tall wire horse fence.

Is that going to be good enough?

Yeah, I want to expand my goat milk soap line. I also want them because 1) I've always wanted goats and 2) I'm trying to stay away from store bought items. I make my own soap, toothpaste, soon shampoo, I grow my own veggies, make my own bread and after I get some goats (I want to get either a pregnant doe or older ones that I can breed as soon as I get them) I'm going to drink goat milk and hopefully figure out how to make cheese.

Just a bit of advise though, I've been making soap since 2005 and I still don't "make" money. I get sales but the money goes back into supplies to make more soap. Starting a business sucks.

I'll see when I do my taxes IF I made any money this year. I couldn't imagine having to watch a kid while making 200-400 bars of soap a week and when I'm not doing that I'm packing orders for HOURS. Hey at least I give myself weekends off...sometimes.

It's tall enough (and tight enough for them not to get their horns or heads stuck), but you'll need more posts and perhaps some horizontal support as well since they LEAN on fences to scratch and reach.

(*squints* Is it me, or are those T-posts upside down?)

More goat pics everyone!

LOL yeah...I did that. That's the fence I put up by myself to keep my roo away from my girls when they were young. That's the fence I'm going to use but that's not where it's going to be. I have more posts that I'll use. And DH will be there to help me and make sure I don't put them in upside down.

Although I don't have a herd of goats at present,I have a few neighbors that do. This is one of the benefits of rural living;you always have neighbors that do. It's up to you to be friendly and find out what is there to share or barter. City folk that move to the "country" haven't figured this out, especially if they're young and impetuous. Trying to do it all, grow it all and make it all is a noble aspiration. I admire those that try to attempt it;that altruism is quite a learning experience. After a long period of time, this experience of "learning by doing",becomes tempered with time management. Hopefully, once you learn you can't do it all by yourself, you learn to depend upon your neighbors and your community to provide. Also, becoming part of the neighborhood and your community, you provide valuable good to the whole. When this happens, you can consider yourself no longer "city" folk.

All y'all take care!

Hey Southern

We have 2 pygmy goats that we inherited with our house....they are soo funny. I have never milked them so I cant help you there. I do know that they are very good at getting out of their pen. The height of your fence looks good. Make sure that you add more posts like you said for rubbing and also so they cant push it over and down....they will climb right out. You will need to give them some toys to play with. We ahve a pile of rocks and they play King of the Mountain on. We have three dog houses inside for them,,,,,they usually both go into one together!

You will love them.....as long as their pen is secure..
Tink
Let me know if I can help with anything else

I don't have any neighbors that have goats so that's why I choose to ask my BYC friends in the OTHER PETS & LIVESTOCK section. I have lived in the south/country my whole life and I have NEVER lived in a city and I never will.

Edited: I'm sorry, I just have to add: I am soooooo confused as to why anyone would think that I'm "city folk" that has recently moved to the country????? I have lived in the same area my entire life!
