Goats: Triplets!

I think that young goat tastes more like venison. As they grow older they develop more of a venison-beef flavor.

Delicious!

adorable!

Don't want to hijack the thread, sorry

We have a boar that was born here last year and decided to get him castrated so he can run with the other goats. We got rid of all the boars except him and we have decided to have him slaughtered next month when we take our pig in. I was going to buy a cow but there was organic meat in the back yard already. So, the question is I heard it was better to slaughter them around 9 months old so the meat is more like beef and the older they get the tougher it gets. We have never eaten goat before but have friends that would take it if we don't like it. Does anyone know???

Most people butcher them around 80-90 lbs. Usually this is the ball park of 6-8 months. If you have got a good blood line going they can actually wein @ 90 lbs (3 mo old). However, any goat can be eaten but the older it gets the more likely to slow cook it. I have an african gentleman who buys all the meat goats I have. He does not care how old. It seems for him and his church members it is just not a party without goat meat!

It is hard to believe that you can eat something so cute. But just as with any animal- they grow up!

Thanks for the great pictures! Those are some awesome kids! I am on baby watch right now. I have a doe on day 156 and I can't wait!!! We have got a very loose vulva and loosening ligaments. I just can't wait!!!

To me, goat meat tastes like - venison, only not quite as gamey. Of course, we LOVE venison.

I do have to wonder though why the boer babies have to be so dang cute! I mean really, couldn't we get some ugly thing as a meat goat so it wouldn't be so hard to butcher?!?
