Yes you always hear the bad stuff on the news. Thank God for those dogs. I sure thought you had sent some to the Lord to sort out from the title of the post. You don't hear much good news about Pit Bulls. Glad it worked out well for your family.

By the way.. If the time comes to protect your animals, you will know what to do.

More like, thank goodness for the dogs. Not necessarily Pit Bulls...

You might be able to tell, I'm not a fan.

But, excellent job taking care of the threat. Well done.

I'm afraid I will buck the trend on this one and say shoot the pit bulls next time they are loose. I am from a state almost last to ban pit bull fighting, and the news over the years is nasty. Your grandkids have much more to fear from the pit bulls than from the bear, and especially when the pit bulls are blood crazy. They not only might have gone after the kids themselves, they made the situation much worse by wounding the bear. A "normal" dog would have scared the bear off without wounding it. Bear attacks are very rare, pit bull attacks on kids are all too common around here. Yes, there are great pit bulls, but like any breed you have too look at the overall picture. Unfortunately the average person who own a pit bull also trains it to be on the bad side so the chances of it harming a person are multiplied.

i am forty. i hated pitbulls for many years. only in the last six months after having actually met five in person (owned by three differnet people) have i changed my mind. i realized i had never met them in person before, just what i'd heard on tv.

when i first realized that they ran aroudn the neighborhood i was terrified. i thought they would eat my chihuahas in nothing flat if they got the chance. now my goats were just attacked this past week and it wasn't pits. it was other dogs. and dogs have chased my chis, but again not pits. so i am changing my mind.

just wanted you to know the background. i used to be anti pitbull too. now i really do see that it si the person, not the dog.

I love my Pit....and wouldn't trade him for the world. He thinks he is a 70 lb. lap dog.....but I wouldn't live where we live without him. I am glad your kids are okay...

There are wonderful pit bulls out there, absolutely no doubt, but I really caution you that if you told the kids that the pit bulls saved them you are not really telling them the truth. The pit bull injured a bear making it infinately more likely that the kids would have been hurt by the bear or the pit bulls. Another breed of dog would have kept a distance, barked and scared the bear off or summoned you for help in scaring the bear off and kept it's self between the bear and the kids. People who have great and wonderful pit bull pets DO NOT let them run loose. I think this is an example of what seems at first glance to be a great pit bull story is only a really lucky example of how it didn't go much worse.

How can you say what another breed of dog would have done? I read a story a few years ago in a hunting magazine. It was about a mountain lion hunter who used a pack of 3 pitts. He said the very reason he chose that breed was because they had enough sense not to physically attack the lion. He also chose them because it was the only breed he found that could endure the rigors of a hunt in the very harsh terrain that most mountains reside and could defend themselves if attacked by the lion. I'm not hear to defend the hunting of mountain lions, but I 'm so sick of the bad rep that pitts get. I have had pitts since I was 6 years old. They are just like any dog they all have different personalities. Yes they have been bred for hundreds of years to fight other dogs. I've had Pitts that were dog aggresive and couldn't go to the dog park or be off their leash in public. I've also had pitts that would shut up into a ball before they would fight. Just like any other breed.

well, there are great and wonderful pit bulls where i live. they do run lose. they do not harass people or other animals. where i live it is rural and they run lose as a matter of course. i am the only one who collars my animals and who doesn't let mine run lose and people think i'm nuts. i am NOT in favor of animals running lose. but i am saying my experience. not what i heard on tv or read in a magazine. my actual experience. you haven't mentioned any actual expereince you have with them. why do you care what was said to the kids? i am very confused.

If that bear was going to attack the children then those dogs did what was right. THEY ATTACKED!
Just trying to scare a charging bear or even getting in between the kids and the bear would not have mattered. It's sad that people still only hear a name and think something bad.... Reminds me of racism but of animals.....

You sit there and say that they are lucky the kids didn't get attacked. How would you know, have you owned pit bulls? Do you know the dogs in question? Have you owned any aggressive dog breed? As others have said, it comes down to training, intelligence and personality of the dog. Also if you are out in the country, you are gona have your dogs tied up? What a joke, they are as good as dead at that point.

Now I am not going to say its not the breed. Breeds each have their own distinct pros an cons. Pit bulls do tend to be more aggressive than most other dogs BUT it still comes down to personality. The problem with all the pit bull stories is they are animals breed from strict fighting dog lines or even worse trained to be mindless killing machines.

It's akin to saying NO ONE should own ROOSTERS. Because those fighting roosters can't be tamed and will attack and kill a person. How funny did that sound? Yes after generations of being breed to fight it can become instinct. You have to remember not ALL pit bulls have been breed for that...!
