Going Back To School...

I'm thinking about going back to school for Radiology.. its been 21 yrs since I've been in school! I'm a little nervous about it, worried about being surrounded by a bunch of young kids! Anyone else done this, and how did it work out? I'm so worried about fitting in..
and how I will do.. maybe I can take night classes!

Do it! Do it! Do it! You will never regret it! Another career you could look at is Medical Technology. This field is not overloaded with graduates looking for a job and many are retiring in the next few years. Unfortunately, med tech schools are rare...one of the reasons for the shortage. I went to Med tech school because the waiting list to get into the clinical portion of the Radiology program had over 100 people waiting on 10 spots! Even with straight A's I would have had to wait no telling how long to complete clinicals. Med tech clinical rotation had no waiting list...so I went to med tech school. I love my job and I know I will always have job security due to the extreme shortage. Pays well, too!

I too am seriously considering another career. My entire life has been in construction and I don't need to explain where we are with THAT trade! Im competing against 22 YO's with a 4 year degree........company's dont seem to care much about experience or performance anymore. Just having that "check in the box" when conducting interviews".

I hate to walk away and start over in another field, but ,my options are limited. As time goes on, I will be in less & less demand without a 4 yr degree. So, if im going to invest 4 years of my life in college. It may as well be for something that's more stable then construction management.

But what?

Thats my problem too.. I worked in factories for years, made it into management but I have no degree, which makes it impossible to find a job.. I'm 38 and I need to figure out something quick!

DH just got his Bach this month, at 31, and he has repeatedly mentioned that he is very rarely the oldest in the class... always surprising him ... sure there are a good portion of 18-22 year olds... but there's also a very good portion of 22-35's... and then always at least 1-5 that are 35-70... yes 70.

So try not to worry too much on that one... who knows, you might just be the one that inspires that student who drops out now to return later in life.

Just remember you have a whole flock cheering behind you!

With increased longevity and the aging of our population, people in the nursing/radiology/medical support fields will be needed. If you can deal with the egos of doctors go for it. And before anyone jumps me, I do know that is a generalization which may be faulty, but for a large portion of my career I dealt with surgeons in a training type situation--I have experienced the ego. Don't worry about the age thing. As an undergraduate, I took several evening courses that were attended by older students. They raised the level of the classes because they were goal oriented and very serious about their educations. We "kids" respected them.
