Going broody? Or just protective of egg?

Yay! That's exciting! Make sure you update how everything is going with your broody and chicks! My girl got on the roost tonight and I think earlier she might have been laying an egg because when I came in later there was an egg in the box that she usually sits in.

She was on the roost once again. I don't know how often she was on the nest because I had to go to work today. I am pretty sure she isn't broody. And if she was beginning to be, I think she got over it. I'm sure I will get many broody girls in the future so I won't be too sad, but I was looking forward to chicks.

As I have often recommended, you are way ahead of the hatching game if you will leave a few marked bait eggs in the nest to satisfy the hen's need to set. BTW, chickens are terrible at math, in fact they can't even count because they don't have any thumbs or fingers. :lau

Then mark each egg with the date laid, store the eggs you wish to hatch in a cool about 50 to 55 degrees F place and turn or tip them every day. Then when your hen has been sitting tightly for two or three days slip the 15 newest eggs under her in the dead of night and discard the two or three bait eggs.

Give her more she is trying to make a clutch of eggs to hatch but you take the eggs every day so she'll keep trying to make a clutch till she gives up
How many should I put in the nest?
Also, the nest is about a foot and a half off the ground. How can I keep the chicks from falling out once they hatch? I don't really want to move her because I don't want to break her broodyness (this is, if she goes broody.)

She has 5 fake eggs in the nest box and she sat for a few hours and then left without laying an egg and hasn't come back to sit. This girl needs to decide!!! :barnie:he
She also walks around making broody clucks and making the scream noise when I pick her up.

Unsure about what you mean about falling out. However I doubt that a 100 foot fall would even phase a baby chick, little less a mere foot and a half drop.

Ok does she seem like she's progressing in her broodiness from the beginning from when you first noticed it? Has she been making more broody clucks and puffing up more?

I guess a little bit. She just started making the broody clucks today. Before she only screamed and growled. She sits on the nest about the same amount and is yet to sleep in the nest box. I did notice there were like 6 of her feathers lining the nest box. She might have plucked some of her breast feathers out but I'm not 100% sure.
