Project GLO's that were started a while back..Probably 3 years ago..If I bred one of those older project birds would it improve blood or hurt it?

Do you mean if you bred one of the project birds to one of the newly imported GL lines?

I would suggest against it. Unless you've found a project line of GL Orps that has been hidden away and has been bred to near perfection I wouldn't bring those birds within a hundred feet of the imported GL. One of the biggest concerns would be the project lines carrying yellow skin due to their Wyandotte parentage. Yellow skin is a recessive trait and can haunt you for generations without even knowing it... then you breed 2 birds together who are unknowingly each carrying a copy of the gene and pop! Out comes a yellow skinned "Orp" that totally washes your outcross down the drain.

That and the type I've seen (not meaning to bash your birds, just going off the pictures I've seen of project GL) is absolutely horrendous. Breeding them to imported birds wouldn't do anything for the type of the birds.

If your only concern is getting new blood into your line for biodiversity I would suggest outcrossing to BBS. You wouldn't have perfectly colored Gold Laced offspring for a few generations but in the long run it would be a much better venture.

ETA: There are now (that I personally know of) 3 unrelated lines of imported GL in the US, you could easily work with those 3 lines for many generations without having to worry about inbreeding issues.

Thank-you for your informative post Jeremy. I'd like to get a good start in the GLOs. Would you mind sharing what the three imported lines are and where to find them?

We have all three lines of the imported Gold Laced Orps. One is from Greenfire, one is Marcs at Heirloom Orpingtons and the other we imported ourselves. We do offer chicks but not hatching eggs at this time and there is a tad of a waiting list on chicks. If you are interested check out site from time to time for availability.

I might post a few pictures..These are not ugly birds, quite the opposite. No yellow legs were used..only black or slate. I am asking because these birds are health stable. Sturdy hardy stock. I assumed if I had health and form first, I could get better lacing later. That lacing would be the easiest to fix. Maybe I am wrong. I know lacing is not easy..I just thought structure and health were first.

Dee here are a couple pics of our UK pullets and one from Greenfire. The ones we imported are a darker gold than the others. What do you think of the darker GL's / lacing? I really like the darker lacing, but not sure if it is the correct color

I do like this information..thank you..if getting yellow out of legs is a problem the slate legs I have might also be a problem..I stayed with darker legs for dark foundation. So on thinking this..I might have those problems I had not considered. I might try it once to see what I get. I never sell the projects, so it would not be a loss, just dinner.
