Golden Comet & Red Sex Link

Maybe you can help with some other questions I have. I got some pioneers from mcmurray hatchery last spring and they grew just as I read, fast. Faster than red rangers but not as fast as cx. My hopes were to have a self sustaining meat bird flock. Since then I've read on McMurrays site that they are a hybrid and wont breed true. My guess is maybe they have a similar bloodline as cx. I have kept the 2 best roos and only have 3 hens left. What would happen if I bred them? What might happen if I crossed them? My only other chickens are EEs and white leghorns. I know this is way off topic for this thread, but I cant find anything else on this breed on this or any other forum other than growth rate. Thanks

You're right about the Pioneers being hybrids and not breeding true. If you breed them with each other or with other breeds, there is no way to accurately predict the marketable characteristics of the offspring.

Well is it possible I could breed them together or with another breed and end up with a flock that will breed true with the faster growth rate and be sustainable, or will they just eventually not be able to breed? I appreciate your help.

I'm not sure about breeding "true", as this isn't "true" breed anyway. They're a mismash of dual purpose breeds and who knows what else. I can't imagine the offspring would be that different than the parent stock. I don't think they're a magic formula like the CX, I think they're just big mutts. Breeding big mutts to big mutts should give you big mutts.

Agreed.
