Finished a new run area for my flock of 8 today. I saw blood on a perch and tracked down who was bleeding. One of my golden lace wings had torn off the toe nail of her main toe in the middle of her rt. foot. I scooped her up before the others noticed, rinsed it with cool water and put her in the safe area away from the rest of the chickens. I didn't have any ointment mentioned and so put Vaseline on it to try and stop the bleeding. I've since brought her in the house in a car carrier so the rest of the flock could start heading for bed. Bleeding has stopoed, she's eaten and nestled down in the carrier. Suggestions??

Conservative treatment would be: You could bandage it with gauze and vet-wrap for 12-24 hour’s to let it get a jump start on healing to ward off infection and keep it from getting bumped and start bleeding again, but otherwise it should heal well.

Hands off attitude: Keep an eye on it.

I’m always conservative. ;)

She may limp for a week or more since those really are painful. It is hard to care for a torn off toenail. When this happened to my hen, she had already drug it through the dirt and grass. Some iodine or other first aid disinfectant would be about all I would do. I would probably put her back with her flock now that the bleeding has stopped. Flour can be helpful to stop bleeding.

Had this with one of my buffs. Flour for bleeding and left it in flock.
thank you...I'm glad I'm not the only one this has happened to. Flour and cornstarch?? Are these made into a paste?

Nope....just dip the end of the toe in. Any blood or moisture will make it stick. The powder binds with the blood and it makes its own ...paste.
Kinda like a fake scab lol
