2 weeks ago, I acquired 4 G.L.'s along with several other breeds (cuckoo marans, speckled sussex, EE, Australorp).
They are beautiful birds. My questions for those in the know, are:
1-Do the hens typically have spurs? Of 3 hens, 2 have long sharp spurs.
2-Is this a small "heavy" breed, or a large "bantam" breed? All 4 of mine, while fully mature, are quite small, for a heavy, but awfully big, for a banty. I never thought to ask when I got them.
They are very social, with the other chickens, but, the Sussex roo that is breeding with the girls, seems to be nearly crushing them, so, I am off to build a simple, little tractor, for them, right now.
I'd like to know more about the breed, if someone who knows, can tell me more.
About 6 weeks ago, I finally got my GL's into their own tractor. It's not the prettiest coop in the world, but, it will do, for now. As money gets better, their living quarters will look nicer. Little Joe, Reba, Tammy and Patsy, are enjoying being by themselves, and I'm starting to collect their eggs for incubation. I got one yesterday, that was simply HUGE. The poor girl who laid it, probably will need a break, for a few days. It was more than 2x the size of their normal eggs, and weighed 2.3x as much as their average egg. And, it was football shaped, rather than egg shaped. It will be interesting to see how it does in incubation.
I'm considering looking around for regular Lakenvelders, of the black and white variety. Does anyone know of a good source for them?
