Goldie’s Adopt-An-Egg HAL

Pics
Goldie has abandoned the last egg this morning. I came to them in the morning and the egg was cold. I candled last night and saw a large space on one side, not sure if that was normal.

The egg was cold so I thought her instincts knew that it was either dead or wouldn’t make it out.

I cracked open the egg and was devastated to find a fully developed/almost fully developed chick. It may have died a couple days before hatch day, or it may have been alive up until Goldie abandoned it.

Photos may be disturbing.

She would have been a gorgeous black chick. :hit

Does this chick look like it was fully developed and ready to hatch? Or did it die before hatch day? Any information is appreciated.

I’m very sorry about your chick @Little Baby Bean . :hugs

The chick looks pretty well developed but did not fully absorb the yolk.

I'm guessing it died about the time it was supposed to pip, since chicks often absorb a lot of the yoik after they make the first pip through the shell.

So it probably died around the same time the others were pipping.

But if you had tried to help it hatch at that stage (unabsorbed yolk), it would have died, so even if you had a way to know it had problems, there is nothing you could have done to help.

In a way that is disappointing to hear but I’m also happy about that. Glad I didn’t make a mistake on my end.
Thank you.
