Golf balls in nesters?

I've got golf balls in my nests.

Right now one of my hens, who is determined to lay on the coop floor in a nest of her own making has been stealing the golf balls out of the nest to put in her floor nest.

Every day I put them back, every day she takes them.

I'm not sure which hen, but I suspect Teriyaki. *Maybe* Popcorn.
lol 😂 :jumpy

Ping pong balls work too. And they are even easier to replace. 🤣

I think a hen has an instinct to make a pile of eggs and after they collected enough (as a group) one goes broody to hatch the eggs. That is before people where interfering with their egg laying capacities by breeding programs.

Old heritage breeds still show this behaviour. My Dutch go broody whithin a week whenever I leave 4-5 eggs in a nest.

Wanting to make a pile of eggs, is the reason why some hens wait in line to lay an egg in the favourite nest box.

That is absolutely hilarious! I'm dying just trying to picture it

I didn't get photos of the neat little nest with one egg and two golf balls before I fluffed up the bedding, but I find it humorous that she isn't content with laying on the floor, her egg has to have golf balls for company.

Coop gets cleaned today so she'll probably go back to the box with less fluffy bedding to nest in.
