Golf Balls

I've heard that people fill the plastic eggs with sand to give them a more realistic weight and make it harder to push them out of the nesting boxes. Mine are empty, but they've never been pushed out or opened. Perhaps I have very gentle chickens!

I think using what's easiest is best. We have young kids, so we have a bag full of plastic eggs in the garage. No one here plays golf or ping pong.

Ping pong balls don't have any weight to them, that's why they get kicked out.

I've been using the same dozen golf balls for more than three years now. Every time I have a new pullet start to lay, she uses the boxes just like the big girls.

Do you keep the golf ball in the nest forever or just for a while?

I put a golf ball in the nest at 16 weeks. Two of my three girls have just started laying.

All three of the eggs I've gotten have been in the nest box, so I guess the golf ball worked! They kicked it out once or twice and I just put it back in.
