So my 6 chicks (8.5 weeks old now) have been doing great, but the one we wanted the most for eggs turned out to be a boy! So poor little Pepper... sorry bubby, no roos allowed, even though you're my favourite and is a complete sweetie(also the most tamed).... he will be going to a friend for dinner. Where he will be dinner. Oops.

Long story short, Pepper's gonna go 'bye bye' and we have room for a few more chicks. So despite how much I desperately want a rooster, and am pretty sure they aren't illegal where I live, we have two next door neighbors, and we like at least one of them(lol) and my parents don't want to deal with crowing, so I won't fight them on sending him to a friend who can put him to good use. =) But it sounds like my mom was cool with my getting a few more chicks. I love my RIR so far, and would love to have another, especially for the eggs, so I know for sure I'll be picking up another RIR chick.

I was thinking EE and Barred Rock for the other(don't have a Barred Rock and hear they're great birds, sweet pets, etc), but does anyone else have any suggestions on their favourite types of chicks/chickens and what I should pick up? My feed store's got a lot of types, so just throw out what you like and I'll see what they have.

I probably won't be getting anymore until the current chicks are moved into the coop though(next week or so?), but maybe I can urge my mom to let me get them sooner lol

Ever thought about getting a bantam rooster? Their volume in much lower, and they make fantastic pets.

I love mine.

The two breeds you are thinking are fantastic layers and pets. I'll add Brahmas, mine are super friendly, Australorps, and Sexlinks.

I think I could only get a bantam at a tractor supply store or something, not sure if I've seen them at Wilco or not, but I do want a bantie! I understand why my parents don't want roos, but when I move out and get somewhere of my own, I'm sure I'll add a rooster to the group. I love the crowing, honestly, much better than a dog barking. We don't really NEED a rooster right now. Though yesterday I left the chicks out to play in the front yard and our lazy old cat came up to me(I was sitting near the chicks) and Pepper ran out and went to charge Slinky to make her go away. I had to hold him back so he didn't attack her! The cat immediately shied off and turned around and went back to the house =P

I was thinking of getting a Brahma before we got our first mix of chicks, but they didn't have them. =( They do have them now, or they should still, so maybe!

Australorps are pretty funny, we have one already, though. (Loki never 'chirped' she went 'PEW PEW PEW' instead... sounded like a little gun! Very chattery, much quieter now that she's older),

And I was thinking about sexlinks(gold/red sexlinks) because I don't want to get another rooster I'm gonna grow attached to like I did with Pepper.
