We have chicks (straight run) in the brooder right now. We would like to keep a rooster (2 preferably) and the rest of the roos will become dinner. The chicks will eventually be introduced to our current flock of 6 hens (3 BRs and 3 EEs) when they are old enough. One of my concerns is size, but DH says it is not a big deal . He really likes the BJGs, but I am concerned that the roo would hurt my small EE, Pia. Pia is a standard, but she's only about 4.5 - 5 lbs (though she is tall and slender). She's a bitty for a potentially 13 lbs roo, right? We also do not want a roo that is of a breed that's known for being obnoxious and/or aggressive. Of the following breeds, what do ya'll recommend? If it makes any difference, our chicks are from Privett (via Welp). Thanks!

The chicks are a mix of the following breeds:
mottled Javas
Buckeyes
black Jersey Giants
Delawares
salmon Faverolles

We had a Delaware roo once. HE WAS LOUD. and mean.

Get yourself an Ameraucana... he'll give you easter eggers.

BTW; If I had to choose only from your list it would be the Buckeye, then the Java, Favs, BJG then the delli.

I know roos like to be heard, so for it to be considered LOUD is frightening!

Mean on top of it!

Why the breeds in that order? I have read some on Buckeye, Jersey Giant and Faverolle roos, but haven't found much on Java roos.

Why an Ameraucana roo? Are you referring to the purebred or the EEs?

I think the salmon faverolle roos are the most beautiful rooster! I didn't know they are gentle too! Are they good protectors of the hens or are they too gentle?

I vote for the Salmon Faverolle, my only reason is cause I think they are georgous and I heard alot of good things about them no personal experience yet! I have 5 supposed girls being shipped weds. and if there is a accidental roo in the bunch I would surely keep him! Not quite sure how that would work out with my little Honeycomb roo though! He might not think its such a hot Idea. Sandy
