They most certainly are, and the television series they had here in the UK was fantastic....Yorkshire is a most beautiful place..ahhh your comments have taken me back years (and years!)

I loved that series of books and television so much that we went to Thirsk and toured the area and his home. Wish I could return.....

My Life in Dog Years by Gary Paulsen
The Sneaky Pie Brown books by Rita Mae Brown (mysteries with cats and corgis)
Call of the Wild by Jack London
Nomads of the North by James Oliver Curwood (one of my favorite childhood stories)

I reread James Herriots books over and over. My DH got me the BBC program on DVD a while back and I watched most of them - got a little tired of the wife changing so much and tapered off. But I will have to go back and watch the series again. It was very well done.

Ann McCaffrey has a book, no not the Dragon Series, but a "romance novel" with a very special dog in it who plays a main part. The title is: Th Mark of Merlin. I loved it, it is here somewhere...humm, time to root around and find it.

I love love LOVE Betty Mac Donald !!! She writes such wonderful descriptions, and her sense of humor makes me laugh out loud every time I re-read her books.

There's an allegorical book about birds titled Swordbird written by a 12-year-old girl. It was really good, and she's recently written its prequel, Sword Quest.

If you like realistic writing about horses read Mary O'Hara's trilogy My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead, and The Green Grass of Wyoming. Also National Velvet by Enid Bagnold.

And don't forget The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, there's also a sequal or two to that, The Willows in Winter, & I think another.

The author Farley Mowat has written many wonderful books about nature and about his experiences with both wild and pet animals.

And Jean Craighead George has also written a number of books about wildlife & people, including the My Side of the Mountain trilogy and also the Julie of the Wolves series.

Happy reading!

A neighbor recommended "The Egg and I", which I ordered from my local book store. First published in 1945, it's a humorous memoir by American author Betty MacDonald about her adventures as a young wife on a chicken farm on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. It's a light read. Enjoy!
