How many times a year does your orpington go broody as I am after a good broody bird with none feathered legs
Cheers Phil

I had an Orpington. She never went broody. You can get a breed that is known for going broody, however, that does not mean the bird you get will be broody.

A broody hen does not have to sit on her own eggs. You can give her whatever eggs you want hatched.

Hmmmm...
Tricky question. In my four years of having Orpingtons, my three never ONCE went broody. Although my friend's Orpi went broody eight times in one year, so it actually tends to depend more on the individual bird's temperament and history- WITHIN a realistically-broody breed of course- you can't expect a Houdan or Yokohama to be a reliable brooder time after time.
And then, of course, you must evaluate your bird's temperament thoroughly and be assured that she is suitable to raise chicks- if aggressive, some hens have been known to abandon/kill new chicks hatched by the hen itself! Please go peruse more broody forums on BYC before driving straight into the joys of (a hen's) motherhood!
I've had more luck personally with my Sussexes and even my Wyandottes for standard and feather-leggedless hens. Of course, I can rely on any of my bantams to go broody on any given day, but that's on another wing...
Among standard, non feather-legged breeds, Sussexes and Orpingtons are the way to go!
Good luck on your broody battles,
~Sarah

Yes indeed! I've hatched many clutches under my old Mottled Cochin banty- they are renowned as excellent mothers! Although the same rules apply: If you get a broody breed, it all depends on the individual bird; even though it's meant to go broody, it may never sit a day in its life!
Though it's a bit of a toss up either way, I'd definitely say Banty cochins are the way to go if you're interested!

My two top broodies are my Japanese bantam and my old English bantam. My Sebright sits a couple times a year as well. She hatched and raised my speckled Sussex for me, which was quite a sight lol. He outgrew her very fast.
