Good brown egg laying chicken

I live in W.V. I do agree getting something with small combs.I did have some trouble with frost bite combs when I frist started with chickens here.

I have a small light for heat now in my new coop, and had no trouble at all.

I have had Turkins,RR,Faverolles,Sussex,Orpingtons,Comets,Partridge Rock, and Austalorps. They all did well with a little ventilation to let the moisture out ,and a small heat light.

But if your worried go with a small,or rose comb breeds:thumbsup.

All the other members gave GREAT advice!

I agree with 'Reinbeau'. before I got my birds I primarily used two sources besides the internet. Good brown egg laying chickens, according to Henderson's, are Rhode Island Reds, "Best of breeds for producing brown eggs".

Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart
This is my reference book (Gail Damerow's, Storey's Guide to Chickens). This is a great guide.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

(Pause to inhale)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

(Lean against wall until dizziness passes)

But since you brought cold-hardiness up, anyone know of a source for Hedemora's?

Hello--- My name is Dan and today I became a member. I live in southern Ontario, the Golden horseshoe area. This year I purchased my first chickens to raise and show in the fall fairs. I have Cubalaya, Phoenix and Yokohama, long tails. Because these breeds are rare in this area I have a problem I hope someone can help me with. All the Yokohama's are pullets. I need a cock . Does anyone have this breed and if so do you have a spare rooster you could sell me ?

Had to chuckle at the possible problems with cold in WV. I've seen it - 63 degrees below zero with 10 feet of snow here in the great state of Minnesota. It's amazing how much cold a heavy brown egg layer can handle as long as they are ventilated properly. A well built insulated coop with the right VENTILATION is more important than any kind of heat. It's been my experience that heat in the coop will cause all kind of problems, namely condensation and moisture which is a chicken's number one enemy in cold weather. JMO.

I vote for the Black Stars (sexlinks) too!

I'm a newbie and my 2 9mo old Black Stars are still giving me eggs daily - beautiful, dark brown eggs

I also have 2 Delawares - same age - still laying about every other day. Even bigger eggs (the occasional double-yolker) but not as pretty.

The only slacker is the white-egg-laying Houdan, but she is more decorative than production anyhow.
