Hi i'm still a little new and was just wondering about which breeds of chicken make the best breeding and showing chickens.

Any breed is great for showing and breeding. However, you want to choose a breed that:
(1) fits your needs and wants.
Do you want a breed with high egg production? Do you want to be able to process extras for meat? Do you just want them for looks? Do you need them to be cold or heat tolerant?

(2) fits your lifestyle.
What type of personality do you prefer them to have (active or laidback)? How often are you able to groom them for shows? (Feather footed breeds are harder to keep their foot feathers in good condition).

(3) fits the size of your coop/backyard.
Check the square footage you have available and plan how many birds you are able to keep. To have a good breeding program, you'll need several hens and an unrelated rooster to vary genetics. You can even have several pens of the same breed. Bantams require less space than larger breeds.

BYC has a good chicken selector tool. I'll find that for you.

What breed of chicken is right for you:
