Our family ordered Rhode Island Red pullets as first time chicken owners (well, as adults, anyway) from our local Tractor Supply store. They called my husband yesterday afternoon and told him the shipment had arrived at the PO, and we could go and take our 4-6 pullets.

When he got there, they'd been there all afternoon without heat, and they didn't have enough food or water...he said lots of them were dead already or on their way out.

He took the six liveliest looking ones, and two didn't survive the night, and two passed away later this morning. I was just absolutely heartbroken. I've been sick about it all morning...we did everything we were supposed to.

There were two that had been strong when they got here, and they (I swear) even looked bigger than the others over night, and were drinking and perching and pecking energetically c.

He called the Tractor supply Co, and the person he spoke to said that ALL the chicks besides ours at the PO had passed away...our two were the only that survived.

They complained to the supplier, and they sent a new batch of much livelier chicks, and my husband brought home <gulp> 9 not sorted chicks, all of whom, plus the two who survived from yesterday's group, are looking just dandy, happily pecking away at their feed and water.

What happened? I'm just befuddled.

Was there anything I could have done? I need to know whether I should go bury myself in a pint of rocky road and watch old Barbara Streisand movies until the guilt goes away.

I tried to show them how to drink, but the sickly ones didn't even seem interested. The ones that showed interest in drinking were the ones that are still happy as little larks. ::sigh::

YOU did nothing wrong. It's just the nature of shipping fragile chicks and they can get shock-y from Point A to Point B ordeals. Plus who knows how jostled they were, cold, etc. Once their little organs start shutting down, it's truly a downhill slide.

If you want the ice cream, eat it anyway.... But don't feel guilty!

if they died that suddenly, then it wasn't you... either the Post Office didn't deliver them fast enough or left them out somewhere for a long time, or TSC didn't give them proper care when they did arrive...

since the new chicks arrive nice and healthy, i am assuming the P.O. left them out in the cold for a few hours or took 4 days to deliver them or something like that...

don't worry yourself! it seems that the PO is the one to blame...

try ordering from mypetchicken.com or Meyer Hatchery... the chicks are in the mail for only ONE day, and i have never lost ONE... plus, they ship them in as few numbers as 3 at a time... 5 at a time for bantams...

Thanks, all. It's a shame they weren't better cared for.

We're hoping these we have currently are much more healthy.
