I would name that pup, "Rip".

We had a dog named "Rip" when I was a kid.

When he died, we put a marker over his grave and it said RIP.

BTW: Our Rip looked just like your pup.

If you Google "names of stars" and "names of gods", you'll get huge lists of cool critter names to choose from, like Procyon, Tiu, Ajax, etc.
