Good Morning from Maryland

Glad to meet you, Shirley. Have you guys considered getting some fertile eggs for that broody hen instead of chicks that you will have to care for and integrate with the big hens? If you give the eggs to the broody hen, she will do all the work and be happy doing it. You can still pick from a lot of interesting breeds.

That is a very nice coop - like a log cabin look. Good for Joe! I hope you both enjoy your birds!

Now the broody is the retired hen "Blonde". She is one of the first hens my son was given. She has her own special place but still gets time with the other girls. I love the log cabin look too. Reminds me of my uncles place growing up with all the barns and wood all over the place. Joe didn't know I took them pictures of him inside the run he was building at first and laughed when I showed him them. He love being outside and we keep looking at the Rhoad Island Reds to see if the waddles are getting red yet on them. One has begun to start its change and is a deep pink right not but not red yet and is just starting to squat when you put your hand over its back as if you were going to pet it. My Easter Egger is getting a bit picked on by getting her tail feathers pulled. She is lower in the pecking order. My Wyndotte is giving my RIR a run for the money at being at the top of the pecking order. She not taking any crap from the others where she used to so I think she will become the top of the pecking order soon. There are still squabbles but they are all working it out so far with out me having jump in.

Adding a few fertile eggs under a broody and letting her hatch is a good idea. We are not allowed Roosters in our area so that is why we bought chicks before.
