Good morning we are the Kelly family, living in South Jersey on a beautiful lake. When we moved here, we had Canada Geese and so many different types of ducks stop by and we mistakenly began feeding them from the local feed store. Before we knew it, a couple soon crew to herds. I quickly realized that my good intentions were suddenly out of control.

When the spring came, the local feed store owner had baby chicks and of course, ducklings. She knew how much I really enjoyed the wild ducks and before I knew it, we were driving home with six ducklings.

They are five weeks old today, two Canugas (sp ?) and four Indian Runners. It's certainly been a learning experience but so far so good. I work at home so I've been able to tend to them as needed. Right now we have transitioned them to a large outside enclosure we purchased that is predator proof for daytime and we bring them in at night.

I read as many posts as possible to learn as much as I can and be prepared for what comes next. This forum really is a wealth of information.

Living on the lake they can't free range because we can't have them go into the lake, but we can provide plenty of water sources for them to enjoy on their own. We also have a chocolate Lab and two tiny mix dogs who sit and stare at them not sure what they think. Our Lab is quite used to being around other animals specifically birds and doesn't pay them any mind so we knew we would be okay.

Lastly, we are a law enforcement and military family so to any other LEO or military families out there, thank you for your service. Many blessings....

Nice to meet you. Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock. Please be very cautious with wild ducks and geese. It is believed they are the carriers of the Avian virus that has caused the extermination of millions of poultry from commercial and farm flocks.

Yes, I'm aware. However, we do live on a lake, so while I have taken steps such as putting reflective ribbon in all of my trees to keep them away, which has worked so far, all I can do is chase them.

The Lake Community Club helps as well.
