:frowHello! My family and I just “adopted” a friends 4 hens yesterday. They are approx 8 months old and I’m unsure of their breeds. Although, I plan to google that today. I would love beginner tips and advice to keep these girls happy and healthy. One of the hens was described as “broody” And the other 3 as “layers.”

I actually heard about this community from the clerk at Home Depot where we purchased our first coop. We were VERY limited on time (1 day notice) and options before being asked to bring these girls home. We already have ordered a different coop that should be here this week.

Before bringing the girls home yesterday, we were a family of five. Two boys (6, 4) and one girl(2) plus, a year old lab mix, 3 kitty cats and 3 betta Fish. :p

Hello! Welcome to BYC! If you want help on figuring out what breeds you have, you can get an answer very quick if you ask on here!

Also, just want to say that when a female chicken is under a year old, it is a PULLET. It’s a hen once it is a year old. Same with roosters, except the term is COCKEREL. These words will just help people here understand what age your chickens are instead of saying their actual age every time!

:welcome I've had chickens now for about 1 1/2 years and this site has helped tremendously. Any question you have has been asked on this site already. Even the ones you think are ridiculous to ask. They are almost word for word. Don't be afraid to ask and one thing I learned is go straight to the point don't beat around the bush. Good luck with the new chickens! Post some pics and someone will help with breeds.

This is so true! I search a question first and pretty much always find my answer ... maybe why I haven't been posting a lot ... :hmm
