Hi! Welcome to BYC! You are doing all the right things as you begin this great adventure! Getting a coop that will hold twice the amount of chickens you want is a great plan! That way you wont end up with a village of coops. I think your choices of chickens are good too. Buff Orpingtons are the best chickens around IMHO.

Just wanted to introduce myself! My name is Lee After about 3 years of trying to convince my husband that chickens would be a good idea, he finally relented, more likely tired of listening to me (whatever works lol) Im an avid gardener and novice canner, trying to lean towards as much sustainability as possible.

got a great book for Christmas and now in the process of researching on how to submit a permit before I seriously dive in.

I have been a chick mom for a whopping 4 months. My husband also was not excited about getting chickens (our 3 dogs will never leave the chickens alone, wild animals will be attracted to our yard, etc.). Now, he likes the chickens much more than he admits. He gets them out in their playpen for foraging & asks if they are in bed, what is coop temp & other questions, lots of questions about their well-being for someone who wanted no part of being a chicken parent lol.
You are in the right place to learn & prepare for being a responsible chicken mom. Pesky ordinance limits me to coop & run no more than 32 sf in size so I have only two chickens, Mildred & Louise, silver-laced Wyandottes. They are our pets. I didn't realize how friendly chickens could be, they are always excited to see me & I'm sure it has nothing to do with food!
