good news/bad news

there's a simple reason for your dog and the goatling..... it's still smell like blood/ colostrum, a bit irresistable for a dog... the next time you have a kid and dog, only introduce them on the 3rd day if it's all new to the dog.

Even though my dogs are small, I take absolutely no chances with the dogs and goats and chickens. The dogs are kept away from everyone. They may be my little sweethearts, but they are predators and I'm not going to put them in a position of tempering their breeding and hope for the best. So, blood or no blood, the best defense is keeping them safely separated permanently. It's very difficult to make an animal go against instinct.

Stonerowfarm has a good warning about the mom. We just lost our mother goat and we are pretty sure it was mastitis. She just refused to nurse the little girl from birth and quit letting the boy nurse after a couple of weeks. We tried milking her but it was impossible. We thought she was drying up real well and then she just got real sick real fast.
My heart aches for you.

I have to disagree with that, we use our dogs as foster mother for all our hand raised animals be it piglet, sheep or goat. They stay with the dogs from day 1 and we feed them milk, the females usually take the mothering role and keep the males away for the first couple of weeks. This way we don't need to worry about keeping the babies warm and the dogs clean them up

.It's all in their training, they are not allowed to harm anything they're meant to guard.
