Question: If I'm going to be mixing chicks that are six weeks different in ages, should I get two houses - one for each end of the pen, in case they hate each other?

I'm with you. I've got the full-time work, single mom-dom thing going on. Not to mention that I've never built anything in my life! I ordered one of the log cabin houses and just put it together today. It will work nicely for my two city girls. This weekend my mission, should I choose to accept it, is to modify it and build some sort of run. (I'm scared!) Those chickies are just itching to move outside!

that was exactly what i did. i thought and thought about making my coop and the more i thought about it, the less i wanted to fight with it. so i bought a small wood dog house and then built the pen attached to it. its perfect for my 3 little girls

You can definitely build a run. Look at Hcammack's pvc tube and mesh run. If you can put a child's puzzle together you can make one. Just pick up a hack saw, some pvc tube, and pvc corner connectors and some pvc glue from your local home center to make a simple box's frame. Most will be in the plumbing aisle and the clerk can point them out to you. Then buy a roll of chicken wire and cover it. No strenghth involved and very little intelligence involved too.

Or instead just pick up a few 1x1 boards and nails instead to make you simple, box. I think any child with a 5th grade intelligence could make a box frame within a couple hours. They do it all the time with Tinker toys.

It could be done in 30 minutes actually by anyone with a basic human IQ. No strength involved. A dinner pot is much heavier than a small board or tube. Please post pictures.
