Good Run Floor???

What makes a good run floor? Grass n/a so wood chips? sand?

If I had a choice, I'd go with sand. It is easily cleaned and drains very well. Plus they get all the grit they need. Any organic material can make the run wetter and may mold or mildew in wet weather.

Mine just have dirt, but I've read a bunch of threads where people have hauled in big truckloads of sand and used that. If you went that route, you would never have to deal with the mud holes that always seem to exist after it rains. I also bet you could use a kitty litter box pooper scooper to remove the chicken poo from the run and it wouldn't ever be smelly. I use a pooper scooper to remove the poo left in my chickens dusting / sandbox and it works very well!
