Good way to mark hens as they are laying?

Hmm yes ours are very much pets so lifting and banding wouldn't bother them but if not they probably would be straight out the door lol

Would pulling a wing out and snipping a flight feather freak them? You wouldn't have to lift them right up that way. Do you have them somewhere they don't need to fly to escape predators?

What about that blue spray they use on wounds? Does it stain feathers?

All our birds are feather-trimmed, both feathers.

BluKote might work. It stains like crazy! I just wasn't sure what it would do near faces for the birds that sit in the nestboxes with their heads facing front.

Don't quote me but I'm sure I've seen it recommended for head wounds so would think it must be okay. Is it a spray? You could always spray some in the lid and paint on heads save spraying near eyes etc

I've been thinking about this, too. I had thought of blue kote, but it's so messy. Or maybe it's just me! I guess you could spray a different part of the body for different days of the week? To kind of track who is laying when. Whatever you chose, I vote you have to take a picture of your flock at the end of the week so we can see your tricked out birds!

I used BluKote this summer to spray on the chests of the broody hens I had broken. I have 10 identical blue wheaten ameraucanas who stay broody. Now I just look in the boxes, and anyone with a blue spot gets put back in broody jail. They make a red spray, but we need green and yellow. I had also thought of tempura paint.
