Aside from the fact that he's been getting picked on badly by his girls and has a very ugly, sore-looking featherless head, the DH finally put his foot down and I have to get rid of my precious Polish Roo, Bobblehead.( he said no roosters before I even got chickens, so I guess its only fair) He is the sweetest, best buddy ever and I am sooooo sad.
I know I will never have another bird like him, tho I have several favorites. He's the best. Probably because he can't see very well to run away or attack, but he follows me around, coos and clucks to me and loves to be held. I rock him like a baby.
How do you get over the guilt and sadness when you have to give away a bird you've grown attached to? I was raised that an animal is yours 'til death do you part and have never had to give a pet away before. My mother still takes care of the horse I had when I was 12 (she's in PA, Im in OR and have no money, so I can't have him). But we are the kind of people who would rather have the animal put down than worry that its not being taken care of....you've all read Black Beauty, no doubt, and perhaps can understand?
I know I'm going to cry when they come to pick him up. I have been corresponding with them for the last few weeks (I'm sure they think I'm totally crazy) and it seems they are good people who will love him. They are even raising and hatching some more Polish girls to give him as his new family. He even has a girlfirend, Polly, waiting for him, but still, I'm almost tearing up just writing this post.
I am going to cut off a few of his tail feathers and make a pair of earrings out of them, so I can always remember him.
