Hey all, this morning we were woken up by a goose screaming, being attacked by a raccoon! We killed the raccoon, however she has been bitten a couple of times on the body underneath the wing.

First thing we did was remedy her shock by giving her warm water with sugar, salt and baking soda.
Next we cleaned the wound, first instinct was to dab rubbing alcohol on it. We realized that was wrong and soon thereafter rinsed the wound with saline. We didn't shave any feathers off because we weren't sure which feathers we can safely trim without causing harm if there were blood-filled quills.

She is limping and in pain, but able to get up to eat and drink. There are a couple of puncture wounds on her.

We went to tractor supply and bought blue kote, and sprayed that on. We also bought Polymyxin B Sulfate Ointment, havent put it on yet. It's an antibiotic ointment.

I have antibiotic pills, but I need help knowing how much to give her. She is a young African goose, maybe around 5-7 lbs? I don't have a scale. Photo attached to see her size. The pills are 800 MG SMX-TMP DS (DS meaning double strength).

Please let me know how much I should give her, and I will administer it right away. Thanks y'all.

I’m sorry no one got to you yet. It might be tricky splitting the pill into the exact right dosage so you’ll have to give her more of a rough dose but she should be fine. Split the pill in half and give her half a pill a day for 5 days.

Thank you! Ive been giving her 1/8th of a pill, twice daily. Its double strength, so i wanted to be careful about dosage.

She does seem better today! Still limping, bt standing more. Huge appetite!

That’s a very good sign!
Ahh! We are so happy. The limp is significantly better, today on day 3. Poor thing hates the pills but, they're going down pretty well.

Ran outside twice in the middle of night last night, PTSD I guess 😓 but I am buttoning up everyones cages as I can, it's 90% more secure right now but will be complete today.

Raccoons may be cute but they’re nightmares. You might try trapping the bastard.

Don't worry, he was quite dead shortly thereafter.
Tree'd him and, after having my husband wait for him at the tree, got the .22 and flashlight. He asked what is it, I told him and he thought I said a "Watoon" 🤣 He looked for the "watoon" for 15 min until I returned and asked me again. 👀 It took us a while to find him... but those shiny eyes finally peeked out.

Got a taxidermist on the job, too. Will have a plaque underneath labelled "Watoon"

Hey there, so, we have a situation that happened, its certainly related but we have no idea whats going on.

The goose is off the medication now, but after work today we noticed something was wrong.

He/she (were unsure of gender) looks like he might be nauscious, or something. Clearly not feeling well, out of it. Doing the oil head twirl above the oil gland instead of on it, and a bit weakly. Still able to walk but, laying down often.

Hes eating and drinking still, but as i watched, he would try a few times without partaking. His head also looked a little wobbly yesterday. The meds have been out of his system a couple days so, not sure if it could be side effects? Or could it be some sort of breakthrough infection? The wound has healed nicely and we dont even really see anything anymore...

Hes less alert and doesnt extend his head out all the way. We need to see how hes doing after work i suppose... Really not sure what is wrong with him and what to do.
