GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Mine are mellow but one took quick steps over and bit my gf in the calf. Later he was hissing at me. But my husband calls them over and they eat out of his hand.
Big. calm , confident hubby, shows no fear = respectful gander. Friend..new person, needs putting in her place!

Aren´t they terrors!

Hey guys. From the first set of eggs, we have 3 remaining from the 5 put in. 2 had absolutely no progress and we pulled them after the last candling. Cracked them open, and sure enough they had just a yolk, no embryo. The other 3 though, look AMAZING! Lots of growth, nice veining all over, and we can see the shadow of the chicks. 2 moved while we were candling! The only worries with those 3 is their air sac. All of them are saddled. I'm trying to get a picture but it's proving difficult. I'm trying to decide if I should leave them on their sides to hatch, or carton them. Can you please share experiences with this? I'm torn! I'm reading mixed results all the way around. Good thing though, the second set of eggs all look AWESOME! Great development, air cells are perfect.. Just waiting. Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,

I think my young wanna-be-momma goose gave up.

With less then a week to go to get to the 32 day mark she's been off the nest awhole lot more then she's been on it.

In fact this morning just this morning she walked right out of the pen with all the rest first thing like it was her normal routine.

She's been sitting all this time and now, I think she gave up. I candeled twice and I could only see possibly 3 eggs that looked to be developing.

But now it seems she's not interested anymore.

Comments about why she's doing this would be a great help.

Thanks KWS

Could be it´s first time and she´s lost the plot., but normally it´s the case that they won´t leave the nest...
Could be she knows there´s nothing going on in there..
Could be that as they´re getting closer to hatch that she´s leaving them more, and it just seems a long time to you...
Do the eggs smell ok? Do you have a means of keeping them warm for a few days just in case there´s any gozzie in there? (desk lamp over a box, incubator (better, of course..broody duck or chicken?

Well mr. Gander came after me twice yesterday. Good for me is that I never back away from an attack. But in 7 years, I've only been attacked by my male silkie (what a joke), and the neighbor's BR roo, who gave it up when I met his attack head on and he had to back away. No hitting involved.
Sounds like you know what to do... is he just hissing and running at you? You could just take a broomstick with you...they respect a broomstick, it gives you some space, too, to avoid unnecessary bruises, then he´ll be all sweet as pie later on in the year!

It´d be interesting to see if anything changes with hubby!

like brazil said its probely her first time.
And i once had a broody hen on 2 goose eggs and the hen stopped out of the sudden so i got the two goose eggs(which were 28 days old)and put them under the red heating lamp and they were slow at hatching but they still came out happy and healty.i made sure the eggs werent too hot or cold .But you can also wrap a hotwater bottle and cover it with a towel and put around the eggs to keep warm and theres also alot of other methods :/ .Only if you have time.Unless you have a incubator !
