GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Hi I have Pilgrim geese that produce infertile eggs... third lot of eggs with no result. I had one gander and three females and after the first two failures I got another gander and another goose from a more remote farmer. there is another nest filled with eggs now but no breeding seems to be happening- the geese have a big pod and lots of grass and feed. No one in Fiji is able to breed these birds and I think that they will eventually die out- only a few remain after their introduction perhaps a decade ago. Ideas anyone?
Welcome Fiji Farmer!!!

If you are having problems with fertility then they may be to inbred. But If the problem is fertility then it is better to have one gander per female. Two females may be too much for the gander since there are problems and three females are just too many for the gander if you are having fertility problems.
As stated a swimming pool is always great for them to get in and breed with the girls.... So good luck with them breeding and trying to get some fertile eggs....

Okay... good thoughts... I don't think they are mating at all- after many months I have never seen it. After separating them i hope I will finally see some mating activity! Fortunately the geese lay year round here, pausing a month or two between sets-so I will get 3-4 chances a year- if I get success the flock will grow rapidly..... but only if!

I have an old bathtub and will set that u as a breeding pool for the second group of geese. I have never seen them mating... and I have heard that geese will not pair well with their mother or with their sisters. I think we have a good strategy for that now though as they come from two sources... so I will mix them up.
I hope all goes well for you now. Some gees are particular about mating with family members, but others most certainly are not. I have here bros and sis that mate no problem. However, I do notice that they prefer geese that are from outside the family, so maybe this swap will work for you.
Will you get another old bathtub? That´d be perfect.
Also, as Ruru said, you may just want to keep one gander with one female, and pop the other two females in together for now. Once the first females are sitting nicely, you could always let the ganders have another as long as they don´t interfere with the sitting one. Or, wait until next year and pair them with any males that may hatch.......

Please do let us know how it goes for you.

Just browsing through, looking for a particular post, and came across this...which reminded me, Utah, what´s happening with your whites lately? Still sitting?

My whites are doing well. The main broody girl (the one who got sick earlier this year) is still sitting tight and her sister joins her in the evenings. I think it will be another 10-14 days before hatch time.

In the meantime, one of our ducks hatched out 3 adorable babies yesterday in our coop, and our dewlap broody should start hatching babies any day now. I expect it will be August before my ducks/geese are done hatching babies.

Thanks for asking.

Oh, that´s great. So you´ll keep the flag flying for goslings for a while! And by August I should have something happening here. They´re all dancing and there´s some mating going on, but no nest building just yet. I reckon by August I should have some on nests, at least.
I´m looking forward to seeing what comes out of those nests of yours! And pleased your white is doing well too.

Yes, ma'am. We'll keep the hatching thread going year round at this rate. Here's the latest trio of ducklings, hatched yesterday afternoon. The babies are not necessarily from the momma who hatched them, as my ducks steal each other's eggs.
