no i wouldn't keep them in a pen together, my mallards are free reign now, not sure of which kind of breed what would you recommend?
I suggest you go here https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/618185/raising-geese-101 look at the different breeds read about them decide on what your looking for in geese and then make your decision. I have 3 different breeds Embden. Toulouse, and Buff I love each one but I will say when the red tail visited us back last early winter and killed one of my hens the only way I knew anything was wrong was when I went out to see what my rooster was carrying on about, All my ducks/geese where pilled up at the gate terrified, not one made any noise.

They really have no means to protect Mallards or even them selves from predators that have teeth and claws, what they may do is sound an alarm to let the flock know of danger.

They will tolerate them. lol I wouldn't house them together or pen them all up in a small area. if allowed to free ranger together they should be okay. What breed are you thinking about because some breeds are more mild mannered than others.

They´re lovely!

livin, I'd like to know what winter is like in Brazil, It's so odd to me that some of us are in dead summer and others are in dead of winter. lol
Well, I love it cos it´s nothing like as cold as in England. We´re much nearer the equator here, of course. So it´s not really dead of winter, it´s just shorter daylight hours!
So, it´s July, the coldest month. At night it can get down to a frost, but so far this year it hasn´t done that. During the day it gets up to about 80ºF, feeling much hotter in the sun, (yesterday some of my geese were panting) but it can be as low as mid-60s and everyone is wearing woolley hats and gloves. Winter-time is also dry season, so generally there´s very little rain, but when it does rain the temperature falls, and if it rains for days, then we certainly feel it, as the sun, of course, makes all the difference. There´s no heating in the houses, so it´s just a case of adding more sweaters. But it doesn´t last long....Right now it´s 9.00pm and 75ºF in the house, can´t complain.

Last year I put a cover over one of my sitting geese, she´d chosen a spot in the bank, but it rained for two days and I saw she was shivering on her nest. So I fixed up a bit of tarpaulin over her, and she was fine then. the next day, it kept her sheltered from the hot sun!

So your on a different time zone than us too your an hour ahead. Being born and raised in Florida I never got to really enjoy the changing of the seasons I think that is what I would miss the most if I had to move away for the mountains of NC. but after last winter, I was thinking Brazil sounds awful good. lol Thanks for the info interesting especially about not having heat in the houses.
