GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

i am curiouse i am proble not going to do this but is it possilble for a mother goose to hatch and rare chicks is it even remotly possible and is it possible for a mother hen to rare gosslings and how many gossling eggs would fit under a average size hen.

Not sure about a goose raising chicks i dont think it would be a good idea, hatching them maybe ok if you take them from her afterward. A hen can hatch geese. Mine was only able to sit on one goose egg. She did a good job i took it from her though. Its doing great.

Thanks so much. I'll do that. What kind of food should I feed them? I was told Wild game feed, but that's pretty high in protein. What do you suggest? I want to have them close, because I want them to bond to me. Do they put out the same kind of dust as chicks? Is the pine litter ok? I'll put a towel under it to catch any water they spill. I understand they are quite messy, even more so than chicks.

I have mine on Flock raiser mixed with brewers yeast(1 cup per 5 pounds of food) from day one. That way i dont have to switch feed when they are older. They can eat it all their life.

I would think it would be better to have a hen raise a a couple goslings than a goose raise chicks, just because the chicks would follow the goose into the water and they will drown.

o rite but i tougth a goose egg needs more humididy and in an incubator it had to be sprayed ith water like as if the mther would go swimming then go back on the eggs her breast woul be wet a hen wouldnt be that humid would it............!!!!

She hatched it fine. Where i live the humidity is high anyways so i didnt have to spray it. The gosling hatched healthy and is now a month old. There is also a member on here that uses Turkey hens and chickens to hatch her goose eggs.

Here are some I took today. I don't know how you guys get such good pics of your birds. Maybe you have more patience than me!

Sebs are about 8 weeks old and the Americans are about 6 weeks, I think. The Sebs are all white. Any "color" you see on them is dirt from digging holes in the yard.

And then when I'm leaving, of course they start paying attention to me.

It is not easy to get gosling pictures un less you sit outside for awhile to wait for them to lay down. Then you take the picture. Not an easy task to get good pictures of goslings!

Wondering now WHY I did that!
