GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

If i had to eat mine i would. We used to butcher our own hogs and steers, did everything ourselves from fattening them to killing them to packaging them. Sometimes i miss the fresh meat especially the pork but i dont think i could do it all again, i have been through too much in the last few years to be able to take a domestic animals life. I said domestic because i do hunt deer but even then i have to shut it all down in order to pull the trigger, it is bad but its not like i knew that animal personally.

I raise my own beef and sheep for the freezer (I was raising rabbits for the freezer as well but didn't have time to keep it up). I've put roosters in the pot and if I had to, I would put the geese in the freezer too (I would rather not but I could if I had to). I find that lots of people don't like the confrontation of acknowledging that the meat that they are eating was once (not so long ago) an animal that was wandering around the paddock (or the feedlot). The way we live encourages this attitude! I have friends who tell me "meat comes from the supermarket" because they don't like to admit they are eating and animal. Then I name my calves things like T-bone (my current poddy calf) and Sausage (the last one) and it really freaks them out!

It is never easy to kill something you have raised, and it shouldn't become easier - by being hard it makes us think about what we are doing and why, and makes us acknowledge where our food comes from. I applaud those who choose to be vegetarian because they don't want to kill an animal - at least they are admitting where the meat comes from and are not avoiding the issue by going to the supermarket where it comes all neatly packed (without the confrontation).

anyway - that's my 10c worth (sorry about the rant!)

I used to live right on the edge a forest in England and they´d have a time each year for culling deer. I hated it when I heard the shots.
My neighbour breeds pigs, and gets piglets ready for sale. I don´t like to hear that either.
But as far as eating armadillos and lizards....I can´t understand why!!!!

I hunt for others the meat that i harvest from deer goes to families that are having a rough time. I dont go through any agency that helps the needy, i help people in my own neighborhood. As for what my husband harvests, that goes in our freezer.
I almost bought a hog this year to butcher but decided not to. My main reason was i did not feel well enough to deal with the whole process.
I couldnt eat a lizard even if i was starving id rather eat dirt lol

What a nice balanced point-of-view. A good rant. And worth 10c.

On a positive note I had a gosling hatch a couple of days ago - and 3 more devloping in the incubator. (I tossed the last of the non developing eggs yesterday) so hopefully I will have 3 more babies in a couple of weeks.
