Moose the Toulouse goose is now 9 days old and has upgraded to the big brooder.
I got 4 more eggs and put them in the incubator yesterday so fingers crossed moose will have some friends by the end of the month.

I tried but it was too fiddly and Moose was very wriggly!

I need some practice.
I am stuck on saying 'he' until nature proves me wrong lol. So, 'he' loves the mirror. I often see him cuddled up close to it chattering away. Soo cute!
This latest batch of eggs are a mixture of pure breeds in the same flock. There is even a Sebastapol gander so I'm really excited to find out what they all look like.

I finally popped my first goose eggs into the incubator this Monday. I'm not too hopeful, though, as I'm not sure how much hanky panky has been going on, and all of my girls are less than a year old.

Just as a warm up, though, a muscovy nest was accidentally disturbed when a boat was moved and the mama didn't return to it. I suspect it is my only female mule (muscovy/ancona). Although this is a goose forum, I'd like some incubation confirmation.

I candled the muscovy eggs (all 18!) yesterday and found that most have no development at all, a few have red blood rings and 3-4 have spider veins. Today is the 10-day mark. Is it okay to safely toss the ones with no development and the ones with red rings? I'm guessing those are a loss and I'd like to clear out the space for goose eggs in the incubator. Last year was my first hatching year and I think I held out hope too long on many eggs that should have been tossed.

I do my scovie eggs just like my geese. With all my hatching eggs I do 10 days max for seeing any development. I'd toss the non starters and the blood rings if it was me.

My brother (who is staying for a few weeks) did the chores this morning and reported that the khaki campbells let themselves out last night. Instead of going back into their house to lay eggs, there were 6 duck eggs in the goose nest, together with the goose egg and the two wooden eggs. He also said that although a white goose (likely my China girl, Embden/Chinese) has been laying all the eggs, after he removed the eggs this morning, one of the toulouse geese came over and covered the nest up. So I guess it truly is a community project!

Not entirely, no. More than 1 person has said it looks like a boy too. We successfully sexed 5 boys from all the eggs we hatched. Saw the little worm penis no problem. We sexed this one 3-4 times and didn't see anything. So until I can get her DNA tested or some other certain tell comes through I can only assume. I don't have any reference points since it's my first experience with geese.

It Worked!! It Worked!! It was Stormy my Tufted Roman x brown chinese!! I think im happier that its hers than i would be if it had been one of the toulouse cause now i know i have my pied crossbred girl that i was trying for.

How long should i wait after penning a pair up to be sure the eggs are fertilized by that gander and not another possible gander? Just wondering. I plan to pen them together tomorrow after she lays her next egg. Im going to mark that egg and move it to the new pen with her so that she will know to use the new nest. Im not planning on setting eggs for another couple weeks, should be safe to assume they are fertilized by that gander by then?

There is a new buzz in the air at my place this morning. My African and buff dewlap girls have snapped into action setting up their nests. I would not be surprised to see eggs later this week!
