GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

My boys hiss and act horrid... but refuse to come within arms reach if I'm watching... my pant legs or boots get it if I'm not. They know that being picked up and loved is the punishment for them. I only pick mine up when they are in trouble or need a good looking over. However anyone else I recommend they stay out of reach or carry the "pole" and keep it between themselves and the geese at all times. Only Mom is allowed in the "pasture" without me.
I agree . Picked up and loved on is the reward for trying to bite my butt. It's always when I forget for just a minute. Today I actually sat in a chair and cuddled him, and surprise! His wife came over and was loudly complaining!

I told Mom today that the Embden is the only one I turn my back on during breeding season. I hand raised him and a verbal warning will make him think twice 98% of the time

I'm unashamedly cross-posting my brag pics of my first gosling of the year!

Here is the solitary geb! His mother is Chinese/Embden, but I'm not sure whether his father is embden, toulouse, or african/embden, or chinese/toulouse. There is a slight chance that his father is seb/tufted roman, although I don't notice a tuft. (Red lights make for horrible pics, don't they?)

Whatever s/he is, he is in love with the gosling in the mirror! (hoping gosling due tomorrow is successful)

The father has to be a white gander because if it was a brown father the babie would be dark in colour with black or purple beak and dark feet so the fathers white for sure

I have five geese all just under 1 year old. Four are brown African and one is white Chinese or African, but it is the largest of the flock and is the alpha male. The other male is brown and second in command.
For sure two are females and one is ??? either a submissive male or a female. I wish I knew.
The question I have is fertility. The females have been laying for the past 3 months. I have picked about 100 eggs. I have tried them in an incubator and let the females brood. Not one egg was fertile.
Could it be because they are so very young? Maybe they haven't "got the knack" yet. I have seen them mating. Both ganders cover the geese; sometimes it's a goose with 2 ganders over her. Sometimes my lone (survivor) Muscovy drake tries to get in the action.
I tried separating them, but it distresses the group and the noise is very loud.
They free range 4 acres during daylight hour and get locked into their pen at night.
Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated. I am new to geese and these are my first ones.
They are not at all aggressive even when brooding.
