GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Yep we've already done both of those, mirror and a stuffed bird toy. But the wife is spoiling him so he doesn't cry too much anymore. She'll hold him on and off for about 8 hours a day. She takes him out in the mornings and lets him stroll around the grass, that's usally when he sees his Daddy and one of his momma's if their out of the pen. But so far he's doing well and as I said before by the begining of next week (Hopefully) he'll have a couple of siblings to pal around with.

Could y'all tell me if a goose needs to have a companion of the same breed?
I have an American Buff goose who I had just received a week ago from a friend. She's an 'adult' and has had a mate in the past who was killed by wild dogs (a year ago i think?). My friend said the goose would be happier with a companion but I'm not sure if it needs to be a male, female, same or different breed. Any suggestions?

I have a Toulouse goose and an Embden gander they are madly in love. So no it's doesn't have to be same breed unless you want pure breed goslings, and if you don't want any goslings then get her another female they will be fine without a gander. and

Hi. If you want to breed them, get a male. If not, she´ll be quite happy with another female, but she does need a companion. Any domestic breed is fine. You could read up about various breeds to see what you fancy.

If you want to get a really little one, I´d be inclined to get 3. (you can always sell 2 later on) They need each other until they´re old enough to be outside all the time with her. (about a month old or so) Now, there´s a good chance that she´ll adopt them if you want her to, or you could raise them yourself and let them go out with her while you´re keeping any eye on them all. Slowly, she may just take over. She´s highly unlikely to hurt them. Geese are so good with little tiny fluffy things.
Other option is get a month-old or older gosling as a friend, and they´ll be fine after a little while. Maybe just a little nibble from the goose, but it shouldn´t b too much.

If your wanting one sex or the other you may want to go with adult unless your thinking of ordering from a hatchery and going to get them to sex for you. Adults are alot easier to tell who is who. But I wouldn't bring home an adult goose an put it right in with the one you have, a few days in separate pens of temp fencing to get to know each other is always best.

Miss Lydia, ordering from a hatchery isn't a guarentee you'll be getting what you ask for. Thats how i got my gander, Casey was ordered as a little girl. And after about 3 months i started to suspect "she" was a "he". But in hinesight it all turned out for the best. I wanted to have a male but was figuring I'd introduce him to my older girls at a later date. Now i have Embdens and from what Ive read they can be color sexed, with about a 98% rate of being correct. I guess i got one of those 2%.

When I ordered 2 pair of goslings from the hatchery, someone got in touch with me and I ordered an extra gosling. He picked it up an hour or so after I called him. Worked out well.
