Apologies in advance, because I'm certain this has been asked before, but approx. how many eggs does a goose lay her first season? And will she sit on them all day like chickens do, or leave to go do other things? And finally, when will she even start to sit on them? My goose has laid 6 eggs so far, but I only saw her actually sitting on them for the first time this morning and then she got up to eat and didn't go back until late this afternoon. Is that normal or is it just because it's her first season and she doesn't know any better?

They have layed more this year at 4 years old than they ever have, however this is the first year I have collected the eggs. I usually just let then do their thang. I don't need more geese. These are here as watch dogs to alert us of predators but I have several people wanting them this year so I am trying to hatch them myself. They don't usually have a good hatch and never had more than two to live. They always squash them in the nest. Mine don't go broody until they have 10 or twelve eggs or more. They don't lay everyday either so it takes time to build up a nest full. The first eggs tend to not hatch for whatever reason. Some of my geese bury the eggs so deep you would think they are planting trees and some of them lay them neatly in a hay lined nest and walk off. Mine tend to lay in the morning at the barn and I let them out all day to forage and then they all line up and go back in the barn area at night. IF I look out and someone wants in to lay I run down and let them back in the gate. When they actually go broody they don't get up and go out with the flock. Usually a male will stay behind with his girl and guard her and the nest. They do get up and eat, drink and bathe more than a chicken will. I usually move a water bucket and food closer to the nests once they go broody so they don't have to walk across the barn yard.

They can lay anywhere from 10- 60 eggs in a season. depends on breed. if she has laid 6 so far I'd say she'll keep laying till she is happy with the # then you'll see her go broody. could be 8 to whatever, but mark each egg so when she does begin to sit you can remove the older ones and get her clutch to a manageable number.Unless you want 15-20 goslings running around the place. But realistically I think a small number first year is best. 8 and under. You'll get your broody you just have to let her decide the time.

I just love this forum mighty Max just ask the question I was going to ask .Gretel has five eggs so far but I haven't marked them I think I will today. she lays in the after noon I caught her in there and peak from a distance she looked so cute in her house rearranging her nest.
