Goose coop

Hey guys. I'm going to start building a new goose coop. I finally am able to do that. This house will be used at night since we've recently had foxes visiting. I also want to be able to put food and water in the house without having too much mess. Please let me know how you guys built your goose houses, and any must haves in the goose houses. If possible please show me pictures of your goose houses. Thank you.

I have a 3 sided loafing shed (horse shelter) as a goose coop. They barely use it even in a snow storm. The run is made out of 6' tall chain link panels. They get locked up in that at night. What more important is a secure run. Geese, water and no mess can't get used in the same sentence. Water needs to stay outside in the run.

I free range my geese during the day, and I put out plastic totes with water they can drink from and bathe in (among other things). In their coop at night, I have a 3 gallon top-fill waterer, and a 7-lb feeder. 8 geese (about 3 months old now) don't really make a mess at night with the water. The drink only what they need to eat the feed.

I have another coop (more of a large chicken tractor) with muscovy ducks and geese (mostly ducks) and they're 1.5 months. The ducks splash every ounce of water out of the waterers (I mean, I'm assuming it's the ducks, I don't stand there and watch them). They make quite the mess.

Based on my limited experience, if you only have geese in the coop and they have access to bathing water during the day, they probably won't make too much of a mess. If there are also ducks in the coop, big mess.

Right now, that particular coop is just grass and dirt floor. It's been really dry here this summer, so it hasn't been too much of a mess. I've used a flat shovel to scrape up the the poop that builds up twice since I put them out there, about once a month. For 8 geese it's been a pretty small amount.

My best success so far has been a bucket clipped to the wall for water and a black square livestock mineral-block holder for the food pellets. Other options get tipped over. My bedding is pine shavings over pre-existing concrete flooring. I also have a turkey-sized automatic chicken door -- you might want to look into one of those if you have power at your site. The door works great at dawn and sometimes the geese put themselves to bed at dark, but not always. They freely wander inside to grab a few bites during the day.

I'll put an oval rubbermaid tub (1 goose sized) about half full for bathing inside if its below 20 for more than a few days. It does get things wet, but the trade off is their joy in staying clean.

If you want no mess don't place a tub in the pen. Straw for the bedding seems to work best for me. I was only keeping food in there while they were young, but will be back to doing that come winter. Though I'll probably put the food up over night.

I only give them food and water inside after the first freeze But for the winter water inside I bought these and flat sided rubber buckets from the feed store that fit right in .
