Goose Incubation & Hatching Guide - Completed!!!!

Ok, question .... I've searched but couldn't find the answer.... 3/4 of my goose eggs are a couple days over due, I wasn't to worried knowing they may not hatch on day 28.... candled this morning and can see them this morning and 3 of the eggs look really good, air cell has dipped nicely and they rock overtime I whistle lol... candled tonight and two of the air cells dipped even more, can see a shadow in the air cell, very slight but a shadow... put them back and was just looking at the eggs with a flashlight and noticed those three eggs are not the bright pearly white they were, they are almost dull yellowish color... my question ( finally) do the eggs change color prior to hatching?
yes especially in the air cell when the baby starts breathing

What causes the gosling to pip early, but then still have the yolk out? My first 2 hatches went pretty well, but this third one is a disaster. The first 2 groups, hatched on the 28th day as well as this last one, but every chick has the yolk still out...I've followed the advice about wrapping in a wet paper towel, etc. One of them pipped in the side of the egg not in the air cell, I caught it before it drowned. I saved one, lost one, and am now working on the 3rd. 3 other eggs have not done anything yet.
Did you help them? It's not often that they hatch themselves without absorbing the yolk. It does happen but is rare. Birds sometimes pip is odd places and can still hatch themselves. If the baby has an external pip do not be in a hurry to help. They can breath so you have time to let them do it themselves. If you temperature is 1 degree low it can add 2 to 3 days to the hatch date.

The membrane is really yellow, took it out and peeled back a bit of shell, blood spot appeared so I wrapped it in a warm paper towel and misted the other eggs to raise the humidity... One of the other eggs is tapping the shell

at the fat end this time and I can see little fractures!!

Letting this guy rest for the day, he/she is breathing fine and will see if it makes any progress in a few hours (it pipped sometime between 11 last night and 6am this morning

Anything I should be looking for?

the only thing I would have done differently is wrap so that one end could lay loosely over the hole (keep it moist but still allowing air). Remember goslings take DAYS to hatch not hours like chickens. At this point I would concentrate on keeping the humidity up and moisture on the membrane. You can take a Q-tip dipped in sterile water and gently wet the membrane directly. I would let it rest till morning at least. Right now is when he's working on absorbing the yolk and it takes 24-48 hours AFTER he pips. Good Luck!

I have been able to keep the humidity up and it looks like its doing good.. Its been whistling along with its hatch mate in the back.. Got one more egg doing the rock and roll I believe will make his presence known by tomorrow ... I didn't think they would be out as quick as chickens but thank you for telling me that, I also didn't realize it would take days!! I took him out at around 3 (8 hour mark) and moistened the shell a bit, pulled back alittle of that yellow leather like stuff took a moment to asses the situation and the little guy gave a lurch and I saw a bit of blood around the edges so I re-wet his paper towel and put him/her back.. Humidty got right back and temp is stable...
But I believe you are spot on with what I saw, I don't think he/she will be even close til morning so it stays put and I keep hands off lol....

I had one pip early evening yesterday.. he's make a second crack but is not in a hurry to hatch. I currently have 5 in the hatcher. Geese taking days is why so many people have trouble with them IMO... it's nerve racking and takes a ton of patience... come over to the gosling hatch a long thread and hang out with everyone that's waiting for their babies

Thank you SO MUCH for all that information. I am attempting to incubate a couple of Sebastopol goose eggs. Being less than a novice, I placed wiped-down eggs (one teaspoon of chlorine bleach in a gallon of water) in the incubator each day I collected it/them. One is dated 4/6, another a few days later, etc. There are seven or eight eggs in the incubator. Four of them are at different levels of development.

The egg dated 4/6 has followed your directions pretty well to the "T." She/he got as far as the dark shadowing up to near the air cell. Unfortunately, I believe she/he has quit reading your essay. The air cell has not expanded significantly. The egg is still full of liquid that can be seen shifting during candling as the egg is carefully rolled. The veins are no longer significantly evident although tiny brown spots are visible as the liquid is rolled around inside the egg. And the baby is not of sufficient size to be visible when candling.

The egg will have been in the incubator for 30 days tomorrow afternoon (it was placed in the machine at about 6:00 on 4/6). It's probably dead, isn't it? How long should I give her/him?
