Goose lovers – please help!!

So far so good, pray for NC and SC they are predicted to take a direct hit. Our biggest worry is the Live Oaks not staying put. The ground is very soft/wet and they are very old trees with limbs that are weak.(FL is notorious for trees just falling over in the soaked ground) So far though they arent leaning, and branches stayed up all night. Palms dropped a ton debris but that is easy to deal with.

Goats are ****** at the rain, birds are loving it. Have to net and put away the aviary birds

The Dewlap think they can fly in all of this rain.

Good morning, hope everyone's geese and other babies are doing well. The storm heading up the east coast looks to be a doozy. To all those in its path, take care! Hoping our bad weather is on its way out here. We got a serious dumping yesterday and then it got so cold overnight, nothing melted. I broke down and brought Spirit (and his companion Ember) inside last night for the first time in 3 months. I figure if he can't get up, he may as well be on a soft warm blanket next to a water bowl. Spirit and Ember seemed good with being inside, but Blind Girl and Gimpy were pretty upset that we took them away.

that once snow melts he will get enough mobility back to make it until his surgery in 11 days.

I'm glad you brough them in. I still say he'd be a good permanent indoor family memember. I don't know anyone with a house goose!

We were watching the hurricane this morning on the t.v. One DD is studying hurricans in schoot right now, so we're checking the computer like every 2 hours while she does her report on this one, its bath, its force, and what it does..... I told her about where you were, and we were releived to see it wouldn't git you directly, but we're worried about the folks up the coast.

Hope this crap leaves you soon too. Best wishes as always for Spirit. What exactly is their aim of this surgery? I have missed out on some of the conversations.

Thanks, but I really don't want a house goose and further believe Spirit would rather be with the whole group living a normal goose life, too. They are going to break bones to try to correct the deformed foot joint and possible rotated leg. My hope is that it will be like the time before when they put the hard plaster cast on his foot and he got around almost as well as a normal goose.

I'm with you on the house goose thing. If you can train an animal not to go to the bathroom in your house, like a dog or cat, then fine it can live in the house. If you have to diaper it from day one then it needs to be outside. Just the way I see it. I have read stuff on here from people who keep ducks and geese in the house, but I just can't figure out why you'd want to be changing duck or goose diapers all the time. I did enough of that when my daughter was a baby! It's one thing when you have a sick or injured animal, then of course you need to have them where you can watch over them. But every day? Nope. I don't think it's natural for the animal, either. It can't engage in its normal behaviors.

(By the way, my 87-year-old father was raised on a farm and he believes dogs should not be in the house. He gripes all the time about our two house dogs. He would faint if I said I wanted a house goose!!)

I don't generally think they should be inside, but spirit is a special boy. However, its Iain I care about more than the amazing Spirit. Hope the surgery frees him for normal life too.

I've never had a house bird, but I like the idea of someone else doing it. I might have to start a thread just to get an insider perspective on Poultry as Pets.

Spirit is much happier outside. The weather warmed up, I shoveled the snow out of the main area of their pen, the sun is shining, and Spirit is mobile again on grass, having a good day. The forecast looks good so maybe we will be able to make it 11 more days until my main vet gets back. Spirit will have to be ok for the next couple of days because we are supposed to be trying to take that darn camping trip on Sun/Mon... it's only the 3rd time we have scheduled it in the past 2 months.

Shellie, you only need to send me the one box for Chance. I want to hang onto everyone else... don't really want to send you these last 4... but I will.

A cold front came through last night and it rained like crazy earlier today. I went out in a poncho and checked on the birds, and both the ducks and the geese seemed to be really enjoying the cool, wet weather. I was concerned last night because it didn't seem like they were eating much. So I added lots of BOSS and some dried meal worms to the bowl, and they went after it. They were probably doing fine, I was just nervous.

Donna, they seem to like the cold rainy weather here, too. I wouldn't worry too much about their eating. I bet they are nibbling on new grass constantly and will adjust nicely. Hope you are enjoying them!!
