Hey Marty,
Beautiful geese. I can't wait fo mine to completely fill out and strut thier stuff. I grew up with a VW, we lived oversea's for 3 years and remember the van with fondness traveling through europe, getting car sick in the alps just so I can see where the book Heidi was about.HAHA don't remember much except peucking in the back through all hte switch backs.
thats funny. I use to get car sick when I was a kid too. Don't see many VW vans anymore.

HI Ms.Lydia,
You are so right, they have become too scarce. Many people remember them from the 60's but we had ours from 73 till 81 and only had to repair engine twice. Fond memories. Dad had made the very back into a bed for camping and my brother and I for playing on long trips which were very often.

Marty, great pictures. How is the barn coming along for stalls for everyone?

Triplell, your geese should be as large as they are going to be given ages and breeds. The new crosses may add alittle more weight, but the productions will stay more trim and similar looking to the body type of an American goose.

Tomorrow is surgery day for Spirit, hope everything is going smoothly today for you Janet and the weather is being nice as well. According to the email notice I got the box shipped last week via UPS ground, scheduled to arrive tomorrow sometime.

Celtic,
Thanks for the kind words and more info on my geese. Another question, should I still feed whole corn plus whole oats? I got them some FR and am slowly mixing it with the layer feed that I was feeding them. Right now they are 1/3 layer and 2/3 FR. I am willing to do what I need to to get them at their right weight with full lobs.

Marty,
Your pictures are awsome.

Hi everyone!

The barn is almost there. We've got a 20' x 12' area, with double doors on both ends. We have skids for making stalls to seperate all the geese in early February. Until then, the geese get 70% of the space, and the ducks will get the other 30% (well seperated). We've fenced around the part where access to under the barn is, so nothing can come from under the barn (but it would have too be very small to even get under there, our barn has a rock foundation and is quite secure). We've got several bales of straw being delivered later this week. No freezing weather expected the next 10 days, but I want it to be ready when we are. We're also adding 1 more fenced area on the other side of the barn, just for duckies. Now, sebbies have their own area with a south entrance, and everyone else will have either a west or east entrance, but all lock up very securly. We're thinking of moving the sebbies to the west entrance though, and giving the turkeys the south entrance. I'll take some pics when its all done, but its so close that once the straw gets here, we'll be able to barn the fowl nightly.

Hey guys, glad to be back from our latest camping trip. We had a blast (again).... and may even try to squeeze one more trip in before winter sets in. However, I wrecked my truck about 30 miles from home when a huge deer flew in front of me while I was going 55mph. Fortunately, my horses didn't seem to notice the impact and the deer died instantly, but my grill and headlight are smashed, and my radiator is cracked. I was surprised the truck made it home after that. I will better assess damage later today.

But as Shellie mentioned... today is Spirit's big surgery day. We leave in an hour.

Sorry to hear about the accident but thank goodness ya'll weren't hurt. Thanks for the reminder about Spirits surgery..

Wow, Janet, that was a close one! I'm glad nobody was hurt and while the damage is considerable, I guess it could be worse. People here have had their cars totaled by hitting a deer. I have my fingers crossed that Spirit's surgery goes well. I know everybody who follows this thread is thinking of you and praying for Spirit.

Hi Janet,

I'm here to check on our beloved Spirit. I've though often that today was the big day.

I'm sorry you were in a wreck, but so glad every living thing is ok. Hope the damage isn't too high on your truck, but it sure can be high on newer vehicles.

I'm so glad you liked the updates. Thanks for taking the time to look over that project for me. I hope the end results are worthy of your efforts.

Waiting anxiously for the news on Spirit. (Go Spirit!)

evening all.

Marty you have gotten lots done on the barn. I would strongly urge you to separate before February or your first eggs could be mixed breed and useless. January would be a better time to split them up. You should plan 30 days before and since you should see breeding by February, January would be the time to split so any early breeding is by breed. Our two Americans are with the Sebastopols during the day, but they sleep in their own stall. No one else shares free range space, we keep them split by breed.

I would be dangerous with a barn that size for sure. LoL I have mastered short wall stall building around here. Oh the things I could do with that under roof space.

Janet, hope today was a success and has an easy recovery for Spirit. Deer have very bad timing, you would think they wouldnt dash in front of cars like that.
