Good morning, thank you for adding me. My issue is with my pet goose, although I do keep chickens and other birds and animals as well. My favorite goose, Erni has a very severe eye problem. I discovered this July 2 while putting the animals up for the night. Her eye looked all swollen and infected. To make matters worse, Erni was already blind in her other eye, due to getting her head caught in a fence when she was little, and struggling to get it out ,injuring her other eye. So, when I saw her eye looking horrible, I brought her into the house. She's been living in my bathtub. There are no vets here who will see a goose, so I have been on the internet, as well as asking neighbors and others who have animal knowledge. So far nothing is working for her eye, it is just awful and getting worse, and I am beside myself. She's an African goose, and very sweet, gentle and a good mama, and I love her madly. I started out cleaning her eye with warm water, I used a mild saline wash , then tried different things...trying something else after no help ...I have tried Vet RX, Vetericyn, Vanodine, and triple antibiotic ointment in the eye. Every morning I fill the tub with water and let her swim for an hour or so. I then take her outside in the yard, in a protected, fenced area, and let her preen herself and dry in the warmth. She eats and drinks fine...eating grass and all flock. I put vitamins/electrolytes in her water, and sometimes VetRX. The eye is so swollen...at first it was a big circle around her eye, and up above it too. Today I see that the swelling is progressing across to the other side of the top of her head. I've never seen anything like this. I have no idea what happened to her...I can only guess a possible scratching of her eye from an aggressive male Toulouse mating with her. I tried to get some Terramycin ointment, but due to Fair going on all the stores are sold out for miles around. I ordered online, and it will be coming in the mail this afternoon. That is my last hope. I have penicillin on hand, but have no clue how to give a shot to a goose, or what dosage. PLEASE, any help will be so appreciated. I am at my wits end. Can't stand to see her this way. She still honks when I fill the tub, and when she's outside and hears the other geese who are out back, they honk to each other. She will probably end up blind, if she recovers and gets the infection taken care of. I am trying to prepare for that and wondering how I will need to modify things for her. I just want her to be ok. Thank you.

Can I see a picture of her? Just so I can figure this out better??:welcome
Well I am a tech dinosaur...no camera phone, and computer issues as well regarding trying to upload. I will see if my daughter can upload a photo ..she will be here later today.

I don't even know if there is an eyeball in there..I can't tell. When I put a very warm rag on the area, she seems to love it. She calms down immediately and lays her head on me and lets me keep re-applying, it soothes her. The eye keeps crusting up, so the warm water helps. Also, the gigantic swelling surrounding her eye is hard. She keeps scratching, it must itch, I am sure it bothers her terribly. The scratching has made secondary scratches to the face around the eye.

Yes, I do that often, especially since it makes her feel better I need to knock out this infection though. AND..update* I had her outside, and I was sitting by her, when I noticed a tiny bit of tan in the nostril on the same side as the eye. I tried touching it but it didnt move. I wondered if it was just her beak coloring, mybe I hadn't noticed before. On a hunch I went and got tweezers. Sure enough, I just pulled out several small piece, and one longer one ( about an inch long,) of what looks like straw! I am wondering if this is whatgot infected and manifested in the eye and around it. She has water to dip her head in, and I am hoping there is no more hidden straw or whatever up in there. It didn't look slimy or gross, but it has for sure been in there this whole time that she's had the eye problem. They have straw bedding in their house, but he hasnt been in it since this happened.
